| Toby's test are not good I had brought Toby in to the ER vet over the Easter weekend as he was having a hard time to pee. Just little drops, no real stream. The doctor took blood work, urinalysis and an exray looking for blockages. She send us away with antibiotics for a bladder infection. I was relieved that is all it was. On Monday, Toby could not pee at all. I brought him to our vet and she catherized him and did another urinalysis. She found ammonium biurate crystals in his urine and suggested that Toby come in on Wednesday for a bile acid test, more exrays and blood work. She phoned me today with the results and I am devastated. She told me that his bile acid tests were high in the 200 range, his blood work was good, and his exray showed a very tiny liver. She suggested a possible liver shunt or another liver disease. She has put him on the hill's ld diet. He has no symtoms of illness at this time. He is a happy little 2 year old. She has suggested bringing him to a specialist in Toronto, Ontario (I live in Northern Ontario) to test and see what the problem is. I have already spend over 1000 in the last week and still do not have a diagnosis. I love him so much. I am not sure if I want to pursue another round of tests and the expense that goes with this. Not to mention, surgery and of course all the risks that come with this. There are never any guarantees. I hope no one thinks I am a bad person for not wanting to dish out alot of money. This would definitely put my family in financial hardship and again there are no guarantees. There is ultrasound available here and I will definitely request that Toby have one so that maybe I will know exactly what I am dealing with. If anyone has information that could be useful to us, i would appreciate it so much. I have also noticed that alot of members with dogs that have liver shunts give their dogs milk thistle. I will definitely ask the vet about this remedy. Thanks for any info. Last edited by TOBY'S_MOM; 04-12-2007 at 03:39 PM. Reason: grammatical error |

| hello I would be glad to share with you whatever my limited knowledge is on liver compromised babies. I am so sorry to hear about your situation. To find out that your sweet little baby is sick is devastating. Icky has liver issues. I would not recommend the ultrasound. It is not conclusive. There is another test that is used where they run a "dye" into the system and watch how it passes through the body. I can not think of the name but I will find out and let you know. Icky has been through so many tests...Just this week I finally flat out asked my vet if we could treat him as if he had MVD. I don't think he has shunt but I could be wrong. The vet said yes. I was so relieved. Icky takes lactulose 3 x day, marin for restoring healthy liver cells and antibiotic. In two days we have noticed such a great change. He was seizing all day long. If you go to yahoo groups, you can join a group who have congenital liver disease. We are all here to help. Keep asking questions. We send our hugs your way. |

| Could you maybe raise the money needed by having a garage sale and then have a big clear jar on the table with his picture and reason for asking for donations on it. You could raise enough for his needs. Many of these guys get the liver shunt operations and do perfectly afterwards and live a normal life. If it boils down to not having the operation for him because of the money, could you see your way in giving him to United Yorkie Rescue so they can take care of his problem so he can have a nice healthy normal life? I know, it's a very difficult thing to do, but it's better than him dieing. Prayers will go out to all of you. |

| Hi Toby's mom Hi Toby's mom. I'm so sorry about your little guy. I don't have any knowledge on Liver Shunt, except to say to try and get him in with someone that specializes. I know my note isn't much to help but hang in there. I do know how you're feeling. My 10 year old that we've had from a pup was just diagnosed with cancer. Stage III and not much that can be done except hope that the removal of the tumor keeps him comfortable and happy for however long he has. His was a tumor in the foot pad, very rare. If you need someone to talk to, please feel free to PM me. Best of luck with your little guy. Elaine. |

| Just because your baby has liver problems, does not make it a death sentence, trust me, I know first hand. If your baby is not having symptoms, you can wait a couple of months as long as you put him on a low, non-animal protein diet (usually prescribed by a vet) and lactulose to save up for the surgery, if it's an extrahepatic shunt. If your baby has an extrahepatic liver shunt, then it is more than likely operable and NEEDS to be surgically repaired quickly. If your baby has mvd, then it can be managed through diet and medications..If your baby is having liver problems, then he probably needs lactulose...This is key in pushing the toxins out of your baby's body. Also, your baby needs to be put on a lower protein, non-animal protein diet, such as Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14...If your baby has liver shunt/mvd, animal protein is extremely hard on their livers... Denosyl and milk thistle or marin(milk thistle with vitamin e and zinc) are also key in helping liver function...The recommended amount of milk thistle is 1/4 the human dose...And depending on your baby's weight, 100 or 225mg of denosyl or Sam-E(same thing). My baby has an inoperable liver shunt/mvd and his body also produces ammonium urate crystals...Because his condition is not repairable through surgery, we manage it through diet and medication, but unfortunately, his body still produces the stones...So, our vet did PU surgery, which basically means that they made a new hole for him to pee out of...About an inch long so that he can pass the stones easily. See, their urethras are soooo tiny, that it is impossible for them to pass the stones through their penis...So, they did this surgery, and he's doing well... If you have any questions, please ask.

| Oh, I also forgot to mention, that they may want to put him on antibiotics such as clavamox/amoxicillin or something like that...

| So sorry to hear about Toby. Piper's bile acid test were high also. Hers were 200 fasting, 300 after eating. All we are doing right now is diet. She had 2 ultra sounds that showed nothing. She shows no other signs of a shunt. Were supposed to have another bile acid test done 6 months after the 1st one was done. So right now after seeing 2 specialists, we are just waiting.
