| Need help with an eye problem. My little guy TJ apparently stuck something in his eye. Vet said it could have even been a blade of grass. Anyway, he got a shot, pills, eye drops and oniment for his eye. Now my question, how on earth do I get this in his eye by my self? Vet says to alternate drops and oniment 4 times a day. Hubby can help in the morning & night, but when I go home for lunch I know its going to be a fight. Any advise? BTW, his eye looks better today after his shot last night. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Wrap him in a towel, papoose style. (We call it "Ya-poose" when a Yorkie is involved and ca-poose for the kitties.) This will keep him from flailing about, but he'll still struggle, I'm sure. If he's small enough, you can tuck the wrapped Yorkie in the crook of your arm and still have both hands free to work with the eye. Good luck!!! |

| Been there -- when Archie had the cat scratched eye. It is tough at first. I did start out wrapping him in a towel. That didn't work well as he would just shake his head. Then went to laying him on my lap. After lots of rubs and cooing, he would finally stop squirming and I could medicate his eye. Made a big fuss about what a good brave dog and gave special treat after -- in his case a bit of string cheese. Towards the end of the two weeks he would just sit still on my lap and let me put the drops in without and fuss --- then run to the refrigerator. Good Luck!!! |

| When I have to do something to my puppy's face, such as clean the gook out of the corner of her eye, I usually snuggle with her on my lap, put my face down next to hers, coo to her alot and generally get her feeling all warm and cuddly. Then I reassure her all the while with my face nuzzled next to hers that "mommy will be very careful and won't hurt her baby" while I take the cleaning wipe and start dabbing and wiping out the inside corner of her eye. She holds still for it, using this method. You might give this a try, if you have the time. I've found that trying to restrain her and then fight with her only makes her more terrified of having it done and backfires on me in the long-run. Last edited by Sweetums; 04-10-2007 at 09:57 AM. |

| Thanks for all the replys....I did try wrapping him in a blanket at lunch, it worked ok, but he still fought me. He was ready for his treat afterwards though, so maybe it'll get easier......poor baby. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | its tought getting eye meds in a pooch that is not cooperative, not to mention having to put TWO meds in them. if you have two meds, and one is a drop and the other is an ointment make sure you put the drops in first and then the ointment otherwise they won't be getting any of the drop medication because the ointment is thicker and will prevent it form getting in there. Also make sure you wait at least 5 minutes between the different meds to make sure they have the time to get in there and work. The waiting part makes it tougher i know. i'm sure hte vet told you all this. Good luck. if all else fails, try the sneak attack approach. LOL that's what i do
