| Help.. Sam is sick...very sad.. Well... I just got back from the Vet's. Sam's diarrhea was getting worse and although he was playing and eating well, I just knew something wasn't right. Sam tested positive for Giardia and Coccidia (the vet said that they are often found together). He said that most likely he came with this in his system. He seemed really good when he got here, but most likely the stress of the plane flight and new home, caused a flare up. He also has not gained any weight and is currently at 2 lbs 5 oz at 13 weeks. He also has a mild infection in one of his ears that is being treated with drops. I have already contacted the breeder that no doubt sold me a sick puppy but at this point, I just want Sam to be better. I don't want to return him, we love him sooo much. I just want a healthy dog. My dog Max, lived to be 19, and never so much had a vet visit that wasn't an annual check up. I was very lucky. Sam in being treated with Albon and Precor (spelling?) for his parasites. Does anyone have any experience with this. How long until he gets better?? Will he have long lasting effects? Does this mean he won't be a healthy dog? I am so worried. Also, we can't really afford constant vet bills. Sam is on a special diet now for about a week and I really want him to thrive. He is still playful and is not dehydrated at all. Drinks and eats fine. Any advice??? |

| So sorry your little guy is sick. Your vet is correct that he probably came to you with both of these. I would call your breeder just to let them know as any other dogs they have should be treated. Coccidia usually is easily treated. Giardia can be a real bugger!! If the vet didn't already tell you, disinfect everything with a bleach solution - all bedding, clothes, toys and the entire surrounding area, floors, crate, etc. that your pup comes in contact with. I am also using baby wipes every to wipe the bum when them go and if he goes outside, also wipe his feet before he comes back in. They can also become very picky eaters or even anorexic with giardia, so just make sure he eats. If he is having diarrhea, a little canned pumpin might help. A good yogurt (I use Stoneyfield Organic) every day (about one TBS) will keep his tummy healthy with the meds. Pancur didn't work for us - we needed the liquid Metronidazole to get rid of the Giardia. Once they have this, they are always more susceptible to getting it again. It is transmitted by bird feces and other infected dogs/cats feces and is many times found in standing water. Your pup can walk on the sidewalk where dried bird poop was and then lick his paw and get it. So baby wipes are a good idea always!! Good luck. Keep us posted.

| From what I've read here, Giardia can be hard to get rid of. It can hang around and apparently it sometimes takes several rounds of antibiotics. But that doesn't mean your puppy will never be healthy. It's just going to take some determination on your part to keep at it. The first thing I did when we got our puppy, having had a few vet visits with our cat already, was to sign up for health insurance through VIP insurance. Just google VIP pet insurance and you will find it. Their monthly rate is around $12 for the standard plan and about $19 for the premium plan. The standard covers illnesses but no regular visits and the premium plan covers all illnesses as well as regular check-ups and precedures. So far, in my experience, I've gotten about %50 of the cost of vet bills reimbursed by the insurance. Since I have the standard plan, I don't get reimbursed for check-ups and vaccines. Also Petsmart has an onsight vetinary clinic that you can get a plan for and that covers all costs of the regular check-ups plus a fair percentage of the costs of visits for illnesses. Unfortunately, the Giardia probably won't be covered by any of them since it has been diagnosed and now is considered a pre-existing condition. But for everything else that may come up, I would definitely sign up for the insurance right away before anything else comes up. On the VIP website, you can look up their rate sheet of just what each plan covers and how much you get back for different diseases and illnesses. |
