Default Sick After Spay! If Only I'd Known How Sick!

Well, we took Pookie in to be spayed yesterday and when we picked her up at the vet afterward to take her to the ER vet to stay overnight, she was a mess. All hunched over, barely moved, didn't even look at me to acknowledge that mommy was picking her up (and normally she'd be overjoyed and jumping around). They told us she was sick to her stomach and probably wouldn't keep anything down, so we didn't try to give her water or anything by mouth.
We just left her at the ER vet and went back this morning to pick her up.

When we picked her up this morning, she wasn't that much better. She was pretty happy to see us, but she curled up in my arms and whimpered all the way home. She couldn't even make a normal whimpering sound, it was hoarse. They told us that she'd not wanted anything to drink. What a crock! When we got her home, I filled up a syringe with water and a bit of karo syrup in it and she drank that one and two more after it. So she was thirsty poor thing!

I had to leave to go to work, and hubby is home with her. She still has not peed since yesterday, and all she is doing is sleeping and laying on the couch. We put her on her potty pad for a minute and she just started to shake, so we gave up on that pretty quickly. Hubby did get her to eat one piece of her wet food, but that's it so far. She makes gagging sounds when we give her food, so we have the other baby-cereal/baby-meat mixture we may try to give her and see if she can handle it. We are giving her one pain pill every 8 hours or so. She had two injections of pain medication last night at the ER.

This is just the worst! I never thought she'd be feeling this bad the day after. Our cat was no worse for the wear after hers. I don't know what else to try with her. Any suggestions? Can anyone tell me how much Pepto-Bismol to give a 5 lb pup?

Please don't give her Pepto- Bismol. Let her rest and sleep as much as she wants and continue to give her liquids, and maybe something soft like oatmeal or baby cereal mixed with some baby applesause. I don't know why she would have had to get pain shots. That's terrible!! It's going to take a couple of days for all that medication to wear off.

aww bless her my sasha had a very bad womb infection when she had to be spayed and had 3 warts removed at the sametime and even with all that she was fine after, little bit sore but still fine in her self so i guess i was lucky or that the vet was more gentle with her than your vet was with your little one.

Okay, I went home for lunch and there is a bit of improvement with Pookie altho she is still whimpering. My hubby said she finally went pee and poo *whew*, and she did eat a few teaspoonfuls from the syringe of the baby-cereal/baby-meat mush I made for her before I left, plus, as I said, she is drinking water.

But tho she was excited to see me, she was shivering in my arms for the longest time. after I got home and my husband hadn't figured out that she had been cold ! He said she had gotten up off the down comforter we had on the couch that she was lying on and gone over to the other side of the couch and he thought she was too hot. So he took her off the couch and had put her on a towel on the floor, without remembering that she always goes over to the otherside of the couch I usually sit on , whenever I get up and leave. So the whole time, (I don't know how long) she'd been freezing on her little towel on the floor, poor baby. As soon as I put her back on the down comforter, and covered her hindquarters up with the corner, she stopped shaking and drifted right off to sleep *sigh*. I guess you have to be a mother. He just doesn't get the whole mothering thing.

Anyway, it's two steps forward and one step back.

Such a difficult time when your baby is sick. She was probably very cold and her little body has been shocked by the surgery. They are just like humans after surgery --- no different except they can't say "I hurt". Good luck and hope she feels better very soon.

Glad to see some improvement. When my Pom was spayed she cried for 2 days straight under my bed. The vet said she was in a false pregnancy when they went in to spay her so I don't know if that made it harder on her. After a few days she was back to normal. I wll keep her in my prayers

This rings bells to me, i had Pippa spayed last year and she was pretty much the same, no life in her, whimpering etc i was devasted and thought the hell had i done, but within a few days she was much better and i know in the long run its the best thing for them. Im sure baby will pick up just the same. Big hugs and kisses sent her way ((())) xxx

I just had my Bailey spayed exactly one month ago so i remember it well. She was just like your little baby except that she never had a problem with eating or drinking. When i went to pick her up she barely acknowledged me and cried the whole way home. She ate, drank and then slept for the next 3 hours. When she finally woke up all she would do was shake and pace. I called the vet and they said that's a sign of pain/discomfort. I gave her the pain meds but she was still the same. I took her back to the vet the next day and it turned out the stockinette was too tight and was hurting her. They gave her a new one and boy what a difference. She was still slower than normal but no shaking or whining. By the third day she was unstoppable. So i wouldn't worry too much about your baby, all yorkies recover differently. I know at the time all i kept hearing about was how fast other peoples yorkies bounced back. Sorry about the length but i know how much i wanted to hear about other peoples experiences at the time. Sending out my prayers to you...

Thanks to everyone for your well wishes for Pookie. She was uncomfortable for about 3 days, then she started in on trying to pull her stitches and despite the collar (soft collar which didn't work) and her onesies, she managed to pull out some, so the doctor made us use a stiff collar on her which she hated.

We are now at the ten day mark, and the vet said we finally could to take her collar off. Now she's gotten all sassy and we are going to have to retrain her not to nip when we are putting her leash or her sweater on, or trying to brush her, and to do as we tell her. I guess we were easier on her when she wasn't feeling so hot, so she got spoiled. She has already managed to take off the rest of the glue the doctor put on her cut after she pulled her stitches altho it's only been a few hours since we took the collar off. The cut is still very pink and doesn't look like it's totally grown together. We are putting onesies on her tonight in the hopes she'll leave the cut alone. She is a stubborn one tho. Last time she had onesies on, she wriggled out of them down to her back legs overnight and that's when she pulled her stitches out, so we're keeping our fingers crossed.

If she wasn't the cutest thing ever, I think I'd be mad at her. But how can you be mad when she's such cute little darling? Well, I just wanted to update you.
