| Sophie Hypoglycemic Sorry if I got the spelling wrong of Hypoglycemic. Here is a couple of copy/pastes from my thread in My Yorkie ( http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73614 ) Sorry if this is to lengthy... just worried, scared & frustrated all at the same time. Saturday 11:34 P.M. 1)Well.... I broke down and got a girl. She is cute as a button, but doesnt take pictures very well yet. These are the best I could get for now. I HAD to throw in a bath pic. It is just so funny to see how little she is under her hair. Anyways... This is Sophie and she is 10 wks old. Attached Thumbnails Sunday 8:39 P.M. 2) Sophie Update ~ Ok.... so, When we woke up this morning she was just laying around..... Didn't think anything of it. Well, that was the wrong thing to do. She kept getting worse and worse, limp like a noodle. Couldnt walk or even hold her head up. I called the vet to get her in. Appt was for 1:40, they told me if I thought I needed to bring her earlier to do it and they would try to fit her in. Well.... about 10 mins after I got off the phone I loaded up and took her. When we got there they immediately took her back and checked her blook sugar. It was 37, he said normal was like 100. So they Nutri cal'd her and gave her a little a/d. She came out not so much noodley and acting BETTER. What a relief?? BUT.... now she has done it again. THey sent me home with the Nutri-cal and the a/d and I have her up and running again. It just kills me to have her go through this..... I wish I could keep her stable. OH YAH>>>> she isnt eating so I am putting her food on the roof of her mouth for her to eat Tuesday 7:46 A.M. 3)Ok.... i had the worst scare with her so far. Last night I was in tears. We had only been asleep for an hour when i woke up for my first check in and feeding. She was sooooo noodely and unresponsive. I felt just horrible. I went in and woke my husband, hander her to him and just didnt know what to do. We gave her some sugar water. I accidentally left her Nutri-Cal at my office & felt like the worst mommy in the world. So... while he sugar watered her I made a mad 15 minute dash to my office. On the way back he called and told me I just needed to get her to the vet or she was gonna die. The sugar water hadnt worked and he didnt think the Nutri-cal would either. About 7 mins after getting off the phone with him I walked in the door. To my surprise she was standing in my living room floor. He said she had just all of the sudden woke up. I gave her the Nutri-Cal and within about 30 mins she was back up. i dont't know how to deal with this. My heart breaks. I can't imagine that it is good for her body to go through this. Are there any suggestions anyone can give me. I am calling the breeder today.... I feel she DEFINATELY needs to know that this puppy was NOT ready to leave. I am going to post this in the sick section also since celebrating "My Yorkie" isnt quite teh place to have such downing news.

| What an ordeal to keep going through. Is Sophie eating any better? Have you tried food other than dog food; boiled chicken, rice, yogurt, cottage cheese? Anything she will eat is better than nothing. Regular Nutrical can also take away their appetite even more, so you need to be somewhat careful with that. I'm sure you've already tried just about everything, but keep at it. Keep Karo in her water, offer some Pedalityte or Gatorade as well, plus any food you can get her to eat. Keep in mind that if she is small, a tsp of food every two hours will keep her belly pretty full. Most pups will eat HoneyNut Cheerios as treats, try these as well. Good luck and keep us posted.....

| Lots of informative information. Thank you so much. I will try this and see what happens. No... she is not eating any better. I continue to "force" feed. She will drink all day & night... but eating is a different story.

| I would offer her Pedialyte to drink, too... maybe help out with some of the sugar issues... But don't by any means replace the water with it!

| I just can't get little Sophie out of my mind. How is she doing? You are in my thoughts and prayers. Sometimes being a Yorkie mom is as challenging as being a humans mom. Sophie is lucky to have a mom like you looking out for her!

| When I got Juju 6 yrs. ago, we went thru this. She was very small and just didn't seem to remember to eat. I fed her human baby food, chicken, off my finger every 4 hrs. or so, also mixed in some soft puppy food. Keep her stress low and pay particular attention esp. after play, as that can make the sugar bottom out. I also kept food in her crate at all times, day and nite. Very small pups are a lot like human newborns they don't know what is wrong when they are hungry and have to be fed on a schedule. IMO. Good luck with your baby.

| I am so sorry that you're going through this! We went through some scares just like this when Miko was a pup...It's much easier to prevent hypoglycemia than to treat it...You have to catch it before it happens. Keep feeding her small amounts every 2hrs. Force feed with a syringe if necessary. We took Miko in to the emergency vet one night when he was a pup because he was having a hypoglycemic episode that he wasn't coming out of and they checked his blood sugar and of course it was low, and they wanted to run some blood tests, so we went ahead and did that. From the looks of the bloodwork, it looked to me as if it could be liver shunt, but the stupid vet said that was impossible because he was too young. That's ridiculous because liver shunt is congenital! Well, they kept telling us it was not possible so we believed them. Months later we had him bile acid tested and turns out he did. He also had a seizure a few days before his appt. and had no other "apparent" signs. I'm not trying to scare you, but maybe you can get a bile acid test done on your baby. It's anywhere from $50-$100 depending on where you live.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali had 3 scary episodes of hypoglycemia when she was a puppy. She did end up having a mild liver shunt but the specialist thought it was so mild and not the reason she was going hypoglycemic. I ended up feeding her Cesars wet food (I know it'a not quality food but she ate it) and chicken. I fed her every 2-3 hours at first and she outgrew the hypoglycemia. Although she throws up if she goes more than 10 hours without food. So even at 21 months I still feed her 3 times a day, Hopefully Sophie will outgrow it too. But food is the key.

| Here is one breeder's information website on caring for a Yorkie puppy. The food routine is structured so as to prevent hypoglycemic attacks rather than to revive the puppy multiple times thoughout the day. You might try reading this whole page. Some good tips here. http://yorkiecare.homestead.com/rules.html |

| Yorkieluv is right. You have need to prevent the hypoglycemia. The best way I know to do this is to make sure she is eating. I just went through this with my new little one. She would not eat at all and became hypoglycemic. Try this hypoglycemic recipe that I got here off YT: 1/2 cup goat's milk 1/2 cup Gerber rice cereal 1 jar of Gerber's baby meat (I used beef) 1 tsp. karo syrup It orginally used half and half but I replaced it with the goat's milk at the vet's suggestion because it is easier on their digestive system. You need to feed her at least every 2 to 3 hours. Use a syringe if you have to, your vet can give you one. I don't know how much she weighs but my Lily was 8 oz and we gave her 1 to 2 ccs every 2 hours. Ask your vet how much to give Sophie. I would also continue the nutrical, giving her two pea sized amounts every few hours. Put it on the roof of her mouth if she will not take it voluntarily. You may also want to give her a liquid diet supplement. My vet had a great one called Rebound. It's made for cases just like this and will give her all of the vitamins and nutrients that she needs. We gave Lily 1 to 2 oz daily. Ask you vet how much to give Sophie based on her weight. Again, if she will not voluntarily drink it, use a syringe. Hopefully this is just a small hump that you need to get Sophie over. We did this for three weeks with Lily and she is now a very very fiesty little pup with an abuntance of energy and now eats regular puppy food like a little pig (I give her the Chicken Soup brand and add in rebound because she is still very tiny) Good luck and please let us know how she is doing Last edited by drawlins27; 03-27-2007 at 04:34 PM. |

| Thank you soooooooo much to everyone who has posted. I have not been able to get on today so I am just catching up. I am definately going to read the webpage that Sweetums recommended, I appreciate it very much. I do truly appreciate all the suggestions and personal experiences everyone has shared. This helps tremendously. Just as a Tuesday updated..... I once again had Sophie with me allllll day so that I could feed her, watch her nad monitor her. This morning my husband & I had decided we were going to take her to the hospital for an overnight stay of whatever they thought might help. After our Monday night scare we were ready for help. BUT... I will tell you this much. She has been almost a completely different puppy today. I did have to feed her but she took it... it wasnt really forced to her. She stayed alert and walked around with me all day and right now is setting at my desk with me chewing on a toy (normal puppy action at last!!) I am very excited about todays progress and am keeping my fingers crossed for a good night as well. I am hoping so much that we are turning back around the other direction (the good one) Thank you again to everyone and I will definately be reading all of the suggested info and considering the bio acid test. I will definately want to be prepared should she not continue to progress. Keep your fingers crossed for me and I will update you tomorrow on how it went tonight
