Default Please Help

Hi I'm new to the forum and I was hoping someone could give me some advice on my 1 year old yorkie Munchie. I had him neutered on thursday that just passed and he has just been out of it since then. He's been reaily lethargic, eating and drinking very little. The vet gave me pain pills for him to take twice a day for three days and he completed those yeaterday. He just seems as if his spirit is broken or as if he is high on something. The vet keeps saying it sometimes takes smaller dogs longer to recover from the surgery (he's 7 lbs.). I am just so nervous because he just does not seem like himself. he has always been very hyperactive and I was hoping this surgery would calm him down a bit but it seems to have just shut him down altogether. If someone could please offer some advice or let me know if this is normal for youkies or should i just take him to the vet and have him checked out.

Thank you

What pain pills were you given? Miko was given Rimadyl after one of his surgeries when he was younger and he had an extremely bad reaction to it. I immediately took him off the pain pills and within a day he was feeling better. He was very very sick on that pain pill though. Just a few weeks ago he had a surgery to remove bladder stones, and we didn't give him any pain pills at all and was much better. Good luck!

I agree with you 100% I had this happen with my pekingese. Same pill and all. He was absolutely terrible and within one day after taken off was much better. I hope your baby feels better soon.

Do you know what they used to put him to sleep? Could be drug hangover and the pain pills are intented to keep him free from pain and make him sleep.

I would take him back to the vet.

Thank you all so much for all your replies and well wishes. When I got home from work yesterday he greeted me at the door and seemed like his usual self although he hadn't eaten any of his food. I decided to go out and get some chicken legs, brown rice and frozen peas. I boiled everything and gave it to him and he just ate all of the chicken. I gave him his toy for a few seconds just to see if he was willing to play with it and he was but i took it away because I know he's supposed to be resting. He seemd to be much better yesterday. My mom is at home with him today and she tried giving him more chicken which he now refuses to eat although he wanted a piece of sausage she was eating. She also says his feces seems runny and maybe he has diahrreah(sp). She says he's back to just lying around today and his whole mood has changed again since yesterday. I've decided to just take him to the vet this evening. I was giving him ceasars which he used to love but he seems to only want to eat what I'm eating and when I'm eating. I will see what the vet says this evening and keep you all posted.

By the way the vet at the humane society said he was either given Rimadyl or something else that begins with a T. I already threw the pill package away. The vet thinks he may just have an upset stomach from the anesthesia and suggested I give him half of a pepid ac tablet to settle his stomach before taking him to his regular vet. Has anyone ever heard of giving a dog pepcid?

I'm very cautious with rimadyl as it's been known to cause liver failure and problems in a small percentage of dogs and Miko had such a horrible reaction to it.
