Default We have colitis looking for good food.

Finnigen was just diagnosed with colitis. He currently eats a mix of Wellness Chicken and Natural Balance Organic. Is there a better food for him since he has colitis or should I stick with what he's on. He's allergic to corn but nothing else that we know of.

Thanks
Shar-Lee & Finnigen

Sorry to hear Finnegan has coiltis. My senior pup was diagnosed with colitis, she was medicated and ate Science Diet A/D after numerous attempts to find the right food. However, it is gentle on their stomach but doesn't add weight though. Nasty stuff and it hurts their tummy when they have attacks. I would advise to be careful changing foods because their digestive track is already irritated. Good luck and let me know how Finnegan is doing.

Gracie has chronic colitis I know your pain . We have tried Hills I/D for a while but have switched to Royal Canin IVD Venison and Potato formula as per the instructions of our vet. We have been quite happy with it. These foods should be available through your vet. Good Luck

My first yorkie was diagnosed with collitis shortly before she turned 2. Vet put her on meds and we put her on a presciption food (been so long ago, can't remember the name) for a short while. I didn't change her food (other than the presciption food for a few days) because I felt it might do more harm than good to switch. Whenever her collitis flared up, I would boil chicken for her and mix it with rice and/or scrambled eggs - bland food for a few days to help settler her back down.

Like others have said, I wouldn't switch foods as it may make things worse. Best of luck to you!

I don't have experience with colitis but I know that when Tatum's tummy got upset from switching foods too fast when she was a puppy, our vet gave us Science Diet I/D because it is a very bland food and it helped her get better. But if yours will be on it for a longer amount of time, there may be better ones out there. Hope he feels better soon.

Tylan Powder (med. from the Vet) is what was TJ's magic cure!

While we were doing the 'strict' diet to see if it was food related...

IVD - Duck and Potato (I hate the ingreds. and crap they put in here) so after the first bag was finished I switch to Natural Balance - Duck and Potato.

BUT, the real cure for TJ was the Tylan Powder prescribed by my Vet.

NO MORE TUMMY TROUBLES for TJ and he can eat whatever

Nicole, Are you saying that the tylan powder cured it for good? I thought colitis was chronic? I need to talk to Rocco and Sissy's vet about the powder.

We can't say for sure that it will never return

Tylan Powder is actually VERY safe for our pets - even if they were to be on it for their entire life. With TJ, he was having these horrible epsiodes, tummy noises, not eating, sleepy and just plain not feeling well and then horrible mucus poops. It then turned to vomitting as well. This was happening at least every 3 days. I was at the Vet left and right. We tried the metrodrone (however you spell it) but it didn't work, tons of poop sample tests, deworming again, then the restrict of all foods and treats except IVD - duck and potato. Nothing was working! Then we did blood tests. The Vet couldn't say for sure exactly what form of IBD (b/c there are a few that fall under IBD, including colitis) unless they did exploratory surgery *no way was I going to do that* - but the tests showed the TJ's folate levels were sky high and beyond, the Vet said he could interpret that to mean that TJ has an overgrowth of bacteria somewhere in the intestinal track. The Vet gave me some Tylan Powder to give to TJ EVERY morning, to see 'maybe, if maybe' this could help. Well, not too long after giving it to TJ every morning, did that aweful mucus poop (and all other symtoms that went along with it) go away! What a relief!!!

I slowly weined TJ off the Tylan. Every month I went another day without the Tylan. I got to the point where TJ was only getting it every 5th day. The Vet said at this point I can stop the Tylan. I said, so that's it??? He said, well for now, but IBD doesn't ever go away completely. He said there probably may come a day where I must give TJ the Tylan again, but he said, we know it works for him and Tylan is very safe for long term. His own dog (she has since passed away) was on Tylan Powder her whole life.

Yes, ask your Vet about it.

Gastritis is an inflammation (not infection) of the stomach.
Some animals develop a long-term tendency for digestive upsets, often after eating and sometimes once every few days. This can follow inadequate recovery from a previous severe attack of acute gastritis or may result from emothionl stress, poor quality or disagreeable food, drug toxicity, or infections like feline infectious peritonitis or hepatitis. It can also be a part of an allergy problem, and many dogs and cats with skin eruptions will also have inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Sometimes there is no apparent cause.
Recommended treatment is to put the animal on a natural diet.

Our Magic was put on Purina DCO (for diabetes and colitis) by our vet and it has worked wonders for her. Magic was originally said to be sensative to chicken and corn...but other foods such as lamb and rice did not stop the problem completely. The vet gave Magic metronitizol (sp?) while switching foods and slowly weaned her off the meds and only the DCO food.
I think there are other brands of vet prescription diet foods that are for colitis.....your vet should sell or know where to help you get some type of prescription food.

Good luck....I hate to here of pups with tummy problems!

Default Wellness sinple solutions

Wellness has several in their simple solutions series -- Venison and rice, duck and rice, salmon..each one is made like the RX versions.

I have been weaning Ralphie off the RX version IVD , and on to the Wellness versions. He is about at half and half now.

So far so good.

That's AWESOME!!!

How's the little fellow doing? I have a feeling he's a lot better And you must be feeling better about that too! I knew the day would soon come where your worry and stress would slowly go away. I hope that is what's happening. When our babies are so sick with these tummy troubles, it makes the Momma's sick too.

My chihuahua has colitis and the vet put her on Science Diet A/D(this was a couple of years ago. Well I did research on the science diet and it is not the best food for them, yeah it fixed her colitis problem but I still want my baby to have a great food for her. So after all of my research I decided to go with Natural Balance potato duck. A plus, all 3 of my dogs could eat it when I started it since it is for all life stages. My chihuahua is doing great on it and they all 3 love it.
