| Hypersalivation Hello all! I haven't been on in quite a while, but I'm very worried and thought to ask of your advice. Spice started hypersalivating 2 days ago (3:00pm when I get home), unknown cause. I checked the room where she stays and there was nothing in there that she could have gotten into. I checked over and over again! I brought her to an emergency clinic at 11:30pm, since she hadn't stopped. Took x-rays and no obstruction in GI tract. She is acting completely normal. They gave her reglin (anti-nasuea) every 8 hours and Pepcid 1xday. Later yesterday evening (7pm) she had stopped the salivation completely and was back to normal. Thought of cause was eating a noxious spider, lady bug, stink bug, etc. But never really new. Now, I woke up at about 2:30am and she started again!!! By 4:30am she was hypersalivating like she was in the beginning. I'm now very very worried, even though she is acting completely normal. Eating, drinking, urinating and deficating. I just don't understand. She has had liver shunt sx almost 1 year ago, but her surgeon doesn't believe that would be the cause. Articles also say that hypersalivation is a syptom for shunts in cats only, but even at that, hers has been fixed. Anyway, now I'm thinking it wasn't a bug. Why would she stop and now start up again??? I'm just lost with this. Unfortunately I have to go to work this AM, but will return by 10:30am. She will also be going to the vet again today, for maybe some bloodwork. But again, she's her normal self. Running around right now playing with toys and tugging at my shirt while I type this!! If anyone has had this experience or has any ideas of what this could be, please let me know. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again, from Spices' worried mom! Nicole

| Liver shunt/MVD is the first thing that I would suspect if she's already had a liver shunt. I know several people who have yorkies that had a liver shunt repaired and then year later, they aquire another one. It's not uncommon. Miko has a liver shunt also, and before he was diagnosed when he was a pup, he used to salivate also, particularly when he was stressed. Maybe it's just stress, but if I were you, I would have the vets do another bile acid test and possibly blood work. Go to this website and join this group...http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/L...d_MVD_Support/ Everyone on there is wonderful, and you'll be able to see the statistics of how often they get a second shunt or aquire MVD after the first shunt is fixed. It's not often, but it does happen...I don't know the exact percentage. I don't want to scare you...I'm just surprised that the vets are dismissing the idea about it being the liver so quickly without doing further testing. Please keep us updated. I pray that it's nothing serious, and that it's just stress or something that will pass.

| Thank you so much for replying. They are dismissing the idea of it being a liver shunt because her last bile acid was done about 2 weeks ago, irronically, or I would be demanding one right now. Her levels weren't completely normal, but so close the dr was thrilled. It basically matched her previous one about 1 1/2 months prior to that. I'll keep you posted. Thanks Nicole

| Update Well, I just returned home from work at 3pm (about 1 hour ago). I spoke with her vet when I was at work and he still doesn't seem to be worried, since she continues to eat/drink and go to the bathroom. He still believes that she got something on her or just licked/ate something that she shouldn't have. Since it went away and came back within 24 hours, he thought it was most likely something she got on her paws. So, as soon as I walked in the door, I fed her and she got a bath. I also mopped the room where she stays with plain water. I plan on doing this throughout the entire house. I'm trying to elimate everything. The only thing is it's hard to watch her out in the yard. When I stand out there to watch what she's doing, she just stands there and watches me! LOL It's hard to get her to go to the bathroom that way, but I really would like to see what she may be getting into. I've looked and don't see anything. Anyway, I will update you if anything changes. Thanks so much for the support! Nicole

| My girlfriend yorkie only does it when she is around puppies. The vet said she is highly stressed about them. She foams from the mouth and drips everywhere until she goes home and away for pups. Good luck |

| Nicole, Thanks for the update I'm very happy to hear that it's more than likely not the liver!! That's good news My yorkie salivates when he's stressed out, so maybe your baby was just stressed. Or like your vet said, she probably got into something without you noticing. They're sneaky little furbabies!!

| Yes, she is very sneaky!!! LOL She isn't allowed outside without me with her now, or at least until I figure this out! She wouldn't poop this morning because I was out there watching her. LOL She'll catch on. I washed all of her blankets and beds as well as all of our bed clothes last night! I was on a cleaning frenzy trying to elimate all possibilities. She is still salivating, but I didn't wake up with her slobbering all over herself last night. Early in the night she did leave a few very large drool marks on the bed , but by this morning I didn't see (or feel) any. It seems to be slowing down...again. Thanks again for all the support. It's still very worrisome for me, since I don't know what's causing it. Nicole
