| Vaccination Reaction!!!!!! FYI My 7 year old Yorkie received Fort Dodge's Duramune Max 5 and Merial's 3 year Rabies vaccine. Approximately 3-4 hours after the shots, he could not put weight on his right rear leg. I called the vet and at that time we both thought he had injured his leg. Five minutes later he was panting rapidly and laying on his side. I called the vet and met him at the clinic. When we arrived he could fell pain in his paws, but could not stand up. They gave him steroids and an antihistamine. The vet spoke with a toxicologist and the vaccine manufacturer. None had ever seen or heard of this reaction. Shortly after the meds, Spunky was walking but still had some cramping up in his rear legs. I drove him to the emergency vet in another city and he did fine during the night. Both vets agreed that they thought it was a severe vaccine reaction. I think it was the 3 year rabies. Anyone else had vaccine reactions like this one. He had no swelling that is typical. Spunky is fine now, however, I would like to find out which vaccine caused this reaction. A few more minutes and he would have been dead. Thanks, Susan |

| Glad he is ok My daughter in law dog had a reaction after getting shots. But he reacted with in 15 mins after getting them. We hadn't left the the animal hospital before it happened. We were outside and Rusty had to go to the bathroom and then he was wobbling and whezzing around. We ran him back inside and the vet imediately checked his gums and they had turned white and he was having more problems breathing. Doc gave him steriods and other medicine and watched him for a hour. He got better but he can't take all of him shots at the same time they have to be spaced out so he doesn't react. Scared us terribly. We thought we had lost him. |

| Yes, last time Scout got shots he got the combo with Lepto in it and Rabies. In two hours he would not bear weight on his legs, and when he did he wobbled around a little. He acted very, very sick. My vet gave him a shot (maybe it was an antihistamine, I don't remember) and had me give him 1/4 baby aspirin every 6 hours. My vet thought it was a Lepto reaction and won't give it to him again. I'm really hesitant now to do shots every year, because they have not done studies to see if dogs actually NEED them EVERY year. The evidence shows that we are actually over vaccinating them. This sounds really dumb from someone who researches human vaccines and feel very strongly about the importance of human vaccines. But they haven't even studied dog vaccines to see how long they are efficacious, which would probably reduce the amount of shots dogs are given and ultimately take money out of the animal vaccine maker's pockets. Ok, hopping off my soapbox now!

| Vaccine Dose I was amazed to learn that a 3 pound dog gets the same dose of vaccine that a 100 pound dog receives! I am an OB nurse and babies get extremely small doses compared to adults. I just cannot understand the reason for this dose of vaccination. Thanks for letting me know of your problem. I will see if my Spunky also received the Lepto. |
