Cry Chato has PSS ( porto systemic shunt)

CHato has PSS or liver shunt. It can be medically treated but he will have a poor life quality the only option for him is surgery.. Has anybody had this surgery done before? If so tell me please about it from personal experience. I am thinking about having it done for him.

AND IMPORTANT TO ALL OWNERS OF YORKIES: PLEASE CHECK YOUR YORKIE FOR AMONIA LEVELS IN HIS SYSTEM THIS IS A TARGET BREED FOR THIS DISEASE. ASK YOUR VET FOR A TEST ON PORTOSYSTEMIC SHUNT.

IF YOUR DOG IS:

DROOLING
UNRESPONSIVE
DISORIENTED
TRYING TO CLIMB HIGH

WATCH OUT FOR THIS. IT AFFECTS HIS CNS DIRECTLY.

I am extremely sad. Please let me know if you have heard of this surgery and how good it is after.

Default So very sorry

I am so sorry to hear about Chato. I hope you do go through with the surgery because I have heard many successful stories. This is not a death sentence. Please go to yahoo and join the group for DVM and liver disease. You will find a lot of support and very good information there. If you can not find it pm me and I will try to help you in any way that I can. Please keep me informed at each step of the way. I really care and deeply sympathize with your situation.

Chatos Mom
My Bobo had surgery for a liver shunt about 6 weeks ago. He is doing great now, eating better (he is on a special diet for now), I think he is growing and gaining weight, I can tell he feels much better now. He also takes a med (lacotose) twice a day. I was concerned about the expense but in the end my breeder refunded the cost of my puppy so that was put toward the cost of surgery. what test has he had done?

Thanks for all your comments. I will sure join that group. Tammy how lucky you are in being able to provide him that surgery. CHatos have had the bile acids pre and post prandial tests, also blood work and something called lad NH3. I think that prior the surgery they need to perform some kind of scintegraphy ( not sure of the spell).

please PM me about the progress of your dog and any other things that I should know about this surgery also I would like to know how much did it cost?

how old is your baby?

I am sorry about your baby. I read your other post about this. I have heard that UT in Knoxville is the best place in the US for liver shunt surgery. I hope that he gets better.

SO sorry to hear about your baby. Cali has a mild internal shunt but had hers been external I would have definatley had the surgery done. I have heard of so many great outcomes.

My Indiana has had 2 liver shunt surgeries. The first one was when he was 7 months old. Everything went well, but the bile acids never quite got completely normal. They were close and we just decided to wait it out for the year. At a year I had him tested and his acids were high again, and six weeks later I had it done again and they had almost doubled. Ultrasound showed a 2nd external shunt. My surgeon assures me that only 1 in 400 dogs get a second shunt. Usually when the first one is repaired they are fine. It was expensive til all was said and done, but I haven't regretted it one bit. Indy is 5 months since his second surgery and has had 3 bile acid tests, all thankfully very normal. I strongly reccommend the surgery, Indy didn't have any trouble with either of his, hardest part was keeping him quiet after he got home. If I can give you anymore info, just PM me. Good luck!
