Confused its just been too much lately ... poooop problems

Oky, I have posted here a lot b/c kikko seems to always have somethign wrong ... today is no different.

he's been having problems almost weekly with diarrhea, soft poop, and blood in the poop. Usually the soft poo with a little bit of blood or diarrhea. one or the other. SOOO .. each time (b/c i'm a over protected and worry-too-much mom according to my mom) have taken him to the vet b/c of his past history of health problems.

He's already been treated for these parasites: Coccidia and giardia.

After a the giardia treatment a week later he started having soft poo, so I thought the giardia wasn't completely gone so i took him back, they gave me medicine for intestinitis b/c the weather was getting really cold suddenly and said taht was the problem. he always does well when on meds, but a couple of days off meds - soft poo and blood in the poo (drops of dk blood most recently ) so again to the vet, this time they are going to put him on meds for 3-4 wks, but are unsure of the parasite. We have done fecel tests everytime. And we've changed his diet to persciption hills i/d i think that's what it was called ...

has anyone been through this? I really worry about the fact while on meds he's oky but once off he's not... and this just sucks b/c i just want him healthy. he has a huge appetite, drinks water like a camel, and has the puppy energy that keeps me up at night b/c he wants to play so much. so i don't know what could be wrong. is he being overtreated? AND not to mention i've postponed my vacation to go back home by a week (i haven't been home to the US for 6 months!) b/c i have to give him medicine every day, and think its a lot to ask a puppy sitter to do. any help would be great. ..

thanks guys, camly

I haven't experienced your problem, but I do think I would continue working with my vet to try to determine the cause. Good luck! Hope you get to come home soon!

currently we are still on meds for parasites actually, that's what my vet still thinks it is ... we did change his food to i/d, i think its prescription hills brand .. i just remember the i/d part. he used to eat eukanuba, that's what he was feed before i got him.

we have our next check up on friday after he finishes this weeks of meds - i will have to look into the irritable bowel disease and colitis. i hope the food change would rule out the sensitive stomach. who knows though.

I/D is a very bland diet which is good for sensitive tummies so if the I/D and the meds don't clear up the poop problems i'd start looking into other possibilies.

We went/are going through the same thing with my lil shih tzu Georia. Several fecal tests....nothing ever comes up. She's on Hill's ID as well. I also mix it with some boiled chicken to fatten her up! She does very well on the meds then once she's off it's the soft, runny bm's. It seems to be getting better slowly. My vet said she has seen this in small dogs and she does attribute it to a doggy version of IBS if nothing shows up on the fecal tests. In her experience she said it usually goes away by one year to 18 months. Georgia is now just a year..so hopefully. Some things i've found helpful to us. Instead of feeding her just in the morning and at night i spread her food out over the day. She usually ends up having four small meals instead of two larger ones. This seems to be helping...the vet said to try it so her system isn't overloaded with large amt's of food all at once. We're also VERY strict about just giving her the HillsID/chicken mixture..NOTHING ELSE. Not doggy treats, bones...nothing. For a treat we will give her some of the ID kibble. We're real careful about food droppings and sweeping the floor often. Like i said it's been getting better slowly. Good Luck!
