Sad Sasha has a hernia

I took her to her well-puppy checkup today and they said she looks great, has great eyes, and her heart sounds good and she weighs 2lbs 7oz, which is really good sized for 8weeks! But she has a left-something i can't pronounce-hernia. It's by her hip. I noticed she was waddling when she walks and the vet said that could be why. The vet was a little frustrated cause she said it was big enough that the breeder should have noticed it. She said it's a simple surgery that will cost me about 60 bucks, and that everything else looks good but that it needs to be taken care of. So she has surgery next friday. My poor puppy. I told her I was concerned about anesthesia with a puppy that small and I've heard horror stories of yorkies being given anesthesia they should have had and she said they use a gas anesthesia that should be really easy on her. Please say a little prayer for my baby girl, I feel bad she has to have this already and wonder what could have caused it, although they told me it was not uncommon in yorkies.

I had a little girl that the hernia didn't show up until she was 9 wks old. I was holding her for my friends parents that were not due back from Arizona last spring until about a month later. I took her to the vet that day and they said it was a little one and sometimes they didn't show up until they're more than 8 wks old. They showed me how to pop it back in and watch out incase it would not go back in. Because she was so little they scheduled the surgery for her 12th week. We kept popping it back, sometimes 3x a day, then it started to happen less. By the appt when she was 12 wks old, I took her in the morning and dropped her off. Dr P called me 2 hrs later and said that it had healed itself, he said that he even tried to make it herniate. He said that there was no need for surgery at that point and to have the abdominal wall heal itself was not uncommon. He asked to have her vet check for it when she was spayed. When her new momma had her spayed the vet checked and found no sign of a hernia.
Good Luck with your baby's surgery. It should be quick & you'll have her back soon.

Is it an inguinal hernia? From a weak spot in the abdominal wall?

I'm praying for both of you today. Let us know how she's doing. Did they tell you when you could call and see if she's did ok? If not, you could just call in a couple of hours.

Well she did well but had hernias on both sides, so she has stitches on both sides and waddles when she walks. They said she'd be groggy and to let her sleep and make sure she's eating. But she's good!

Thanks for the update, it's good that they took care of it now. I hope she has a quiet afternoon.

Thanks girls! She slept without a peep all night but is getting back to herself today, she's running around and wanting to play with our cat but we have to watch her to make sure she's not too active and pulls her internal stitches out. She's acting like she never had anything done! Now... just making sure she takes her antibiotic without a fight so we don't get infected!

I would be very concerned that a vet did a surgery on a pup that was 8 weeks old for hernias, hernia's are very common and the surgery itself was a lot more life threatening than the hernias are.
A lot of times these hernias will close up before they are spayed and if not they do it at the same time as the spay. As for your vets decision to put this pup under at 8 weeks for hernias
