Cry Baby Yorkie with Pavo - maybe.. please help.

Ok, I will try to break this down as simple as possible without breaking down into tears again.

After many years or yearning for a yorkie, I finally purchased a 10 week old tiny babydoll face Yorkie from a breeder close to my home. We named him Monty and for 3 days all we did was lay back and enjoy his kisses. He was happy, very smart and full of love and life.

On the third night, Monty started to vomit... seemed he had eated too fast to me and drank a lot of water and his vomit was smelly and the color of his food (brown).

The next day Monty seem larthargic and staggered when he walked... my first thought was hypoglycemia, so I got out the vita cal and he ate it all up. Later in the evening, Monty had diarrea and again, it was brown, nothing scary like the parvo description of bloodly yellow poo. I figured he had an upset tummy and that we were probably playing with him too much and that he was probably over stimulated.

The next morning he was extremely weak and had more diarrea over the eveining, again it was brown, not bloody, nor was it yellow.

We brought him to the vet and they ran some tests on him. His white blood count was high and his HGB normal, but his protein low. He had just had his third Parvo Vaccinne exactly 7 days prior and was due that day for his forth.

The vet enters the office with a concerned look saying that he tested Positive for Parvo!!!!

Now, regarding my quest for help.... Please tell me if anyone you know or if you have read anywhere of a Yorkie testing positive for Parvo because of his recent vacination. Meaning... could this be a "False/Positive"?? Did the fact that he just had his 3rd Parvo vacination 7 days ago through off the test??? Yes, he was vomiting, yes, he had diarrea, but it all looked normal .... not yellow bloody or foamy like all the parvo symptoms. Along with the fact that his diarrea was a normal brown, his White Blood Count was high.... in most Parvo cases, the white blood count is extremely low.

Now the breeder claims that no other Yorkies in the same pen have it, nor does his sister. The breader also called all of the new owners whom she had sold yorkies in the past 2 weeks to see if any of their dogs were sick, and the answer was no!!! Just Monty.

What are your thoughts, do you think it is Parvo or maybe a false positive... am I grasping at straws here? Am I sinking into denail and wishful thinking?

Default parvo

Not all cases of bloody diarrhea with or without vomiting are caused by Parvovirus and many sick puppies are misdiagnosed as having 'Parvo.' The only way to know if a dog has Parvovirus is through a positive diagnostic test. In addition to the more time consuming and expensive traditional testing of the blood for titers, a newer and simpler test of the fecal matter with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay antigen test (ELISA) are also available through most veterinary clinics. Testing of all suspect cases of Parvo is the only way to correctly diagnose and treat this disease

Default Monty - possible parvo

Thank you for your quick responses. Monty is not in the hospital. He was sent home after given electrolytes and pills to prevent vomiting along with antibiotics. Monty is currently at the breeders house in a separate area from the other puppies.

No, no other dog with Parvo has been in my home. The incubation period is 5to 7 days, I only had him for 3 healthy days.

Please Note... He had a parvo test and it came out positive. But his symptoms are a bit off... and it is such a mystery as to the rest of the litter being healty.

Do you think because he had a recent parvo vacinnatiion about 7 days prior to the test that it was a false positive?

I read somewhere on on the net about a breeder who lost all her puppies to parvo after they recieved their vaccines. I don't remember where I read it but seems like it had to do with a certain company that made the vaccines ? maybe something with the word DODGE in it, I can't remember. Did the puppy recieve all the vaccines from the same vet? I have heard that parvo can live for 7 years in the ground, did your puppy go outside? I don't think that they are completely vaccinated against it unless they have had all their shots and then it isn't 100%. I hope its not parvo but maybe he has recieved enough antibodies from the vaccines to fight off most of the virus. I hope he gets well soon. Also if he does have parvo and he does have some antibodies from the previous shots maybe the virus is not as bad as it would have been and that is why he doesn't have all the symptoms of parvo...???

yes a vaccination can make a parvo test positive. With symptoms not being conclusive w/parvo...I would think maybe just round worm or other parasites, which are common. Did they do a stool test at the vet? When was he last wormed? I hope they figure it out & your baby gets to come home soon. Try giving him a little yogurt everyday to keep his intestines healthy from all the wormer, antibiotics etc. Keep us posted.

Hope your baby gets better soon. I am concerned, however, that the pup is back with the breeder - in the same house with the other pups. Doesn't sound very smart on the breeder's part. I would not have let the pup near the others at this point. Keep us posted. Hopefully it was a false negative and it's something minor.

Cry puppy with possible parvo

Monty passed away last night. the vet just called me 5 minutes ago and said he was doing better last night and eating his food and keeping it down, but when she awoke this morning, he was gone.

I have mixed feelings about not having him stay at the vet, however, he was seen by two vets and they both sent him home with medicine. One vet actually said he would be more comfortable at home and less stressed. According to the breeder, he was keeping his food down.

Now I have to go fight for them to pay my vet bill. I don't want another dog from this breeder at this time for sure.

Need to sterlize my home as well..I have carpeting so I don't know how to bleach a carpet. good grief what a nightmare.

Thank you all for your prayers and your responses. xxoo

I'm truly sorry for you. I do hope you find a person who shows dogs to buy your next one from, instead of the back yard breeder or pet stores.
