Default can I give pepto bismol for vomiting?

Hannah vomited today at 3:00pm and again at 4:00pm. She vomited cottage cheese that she ate this morning...there was even some of the missing link still left in it. I hadn't given her any cottage cheese in 3-4 days but before that she was getting it every day without any problems. Her temp is 100.3. Now she is just laying around. I called the vet at 4:40pm and they said that there would be a $25.00 office fee and $35.00 after hours fee. They don't close until 6:00 pm so I asked why the after hours fee and she said that the doctor leaves at 5:00. I said that if he is going to charge $35.00 for staying over for 20-30 min then I would go somewhere else since they are closed tomorrow anyway. I called the other vet that I use and he was already out. If she gets any worse I will call the emergency number, but can I give her peptobismol or anything? We were in the car driving when this happened but she has never been car sick before. I think it may be a virus or something since the cottage cheese she had this morning wasn't digested yet. She has never vomited before. Has this ever happended to anyone else.

Emitrol (I think that's how I think it's spelled), for nausea... get it the drugstore....but, if she's vomiting it may not stay down long enough to do any good.

$25 and $35? LOL that's nothing. my vet charges $45 for regular office exam and $90 for after hours emergency.

Pepto doesn't do anything for vomiting, its just for upset stomach. She'll probably just puke it right back up. The best thing to do is not feed her or give her water and let her stomach settle. If she vomits again i'd take her to the vet.

Mylo got very sick with vomits and diahrrea when he mas about 8 weeks old, and the vet told me to give him peptobismol. But I guess how much you can give him depends on his weight. He was given 1cc and he was about 1lb then.
I will still be better if you checked with a vet for the correct dose

the pepto was probably for the loose stools. Famotidine, aka pepcid, is used for vomiting

OMG I can't believe those prices...anyway I was upset over charging $35.00 for after hours because I told her I could be there by 4:50 and she said that he woudn't be able to see Hannah until 5:00 and so I would have to pay the after hour fee, I just felt like since I could be there before 5:00 that he shouldn't charge for just staying over 20-30 minutes, besides that the office doesn't close until 6:00 and that is on the door, I can see if he is called back out to work after he gets home but if he hasn't even left yet and he doesn't have to stay that long over then her shouldn't charge the after hours fee...maybe I'm just in a bad mood, but I don't think that is good business.

that's the way it is done. A vet has set appt times and anything after the last appt is considered after hours. The office stays open another half hour or hour for the clients to pick things up or drop things off. Sure you could get there earlier but the doctor can't see you until after his scheduled appts, which mean he has to stay later then scheduled and fit you in. Your lucky they even offered it to you. Some places would have told you they didn't have anything left and sent you to the ER. Vet's and tech's work hard all day long. When closing time comes around we don't want to stay there later any more then you would want to stay late at your job. I can tell you that today I wanted to go home so bad. I'm tired, my feet hurt, my legs hurt, and my back is KILLING me.

I understand about being tired after work, I have to stay over after my shift sometimes too, but I don't get paid extra for it. But I see what you are saying too, but I still think that it was too much.

be thankful you have those prices and not the prices we have in big cities. the prices i pay are probably nothing compared to the vets in NYC which is only 20 minutes from me. I would be so happy to pay your prices.

Next week i have to take morgan back to the vet for a dental check up because i don't think all her teeth have fallen out in the back. I guarentee that appt will cost me at least $80 and all the vet is doing is checking her mouth. no shots, or meds probably.

I can not belive those prices, how do people afford to have pets there...lol. The prices that I told you about are from a vet that has alot higher prices than most other vets around here. One other vet that I went to charged $28.00 for office visit and antibiotics for a UTI. I am thankful for that the prices are not as high as they are there. Anyway Hannah is feeling better now. I called the breeder and she told me to give her some pepto bismol, she said that is what her vet recomended. I don't have any right now though, but every time I have ever taken any pepto it only made me feel worse. I work at the hospital 3 min from my house so if she gets sick again I will got there and "borrow" some medicine..

This is simply my personal opinion, when dogs/people vomit or suffer from diarrhea, usually, body is trying to get rid of the unwanted. In this situation, I may wait until your baby gets rid of everything out of her system then give your baby some anti acid (tablet for children, which I forgot the name but it was given to my dog by the vet when she got sick), only concern of mine with pepto bismol would be the artificial color it contains...

I hope your baby feels better...

Thank you, and I agree with you especially with the diarrhea, alot of doctors I work with don't want to give anything to stop diarrhea because they say if it is a bacteria then you need to get rid of it. But if she keeps vomiting then she could become dehydrated. In humans I would give an injection of phenergan so they could hopefully hold down fluids to prevent dehydration or if not start iv fluids, but in dogs I don't know...can dogs have phenergan?
