Question Dentabone & Diarrhea??

My boyfriend brought my dogs those dentabones the other day. One for each, the small ones meant for small dogs. One of my dogs didn't really eat it, but the other one finished his.
I got home from work yesterday and there was diarrhea ALL over my kitchen! I don't know which dog did it, but since it had little pieces of the dentabone in it Im assuming it was my bigger guy, the one who ate the whole bone.

Anyways, no blood and his energy level and alertness was up and he was running around acting fine all night last night... he ate and drank normally his regular food and water. I am not too concerned about him at this point but I was wondering if anyone had this happen to them before? Are dentabones not good for yorkies or is his stomache just sensative?

Thanks!!

That's what happens to Bentley and why he doesn't get them anymore!

I've never given them to Cha Cha or Sherman since they came to live with us after this happened with Bentley. Now they all get their teeth brushed and get regular cleanings at the vet.

Don't give the dogs any kind of chew that they can eat, otherwise they can get sick. Most of those dentabones are not 100% digestable anyway. JUst get a nice leg bone about 1" thick, take the marrow out of it and any meat and fat off the outside and let them chew on those. It's much better for their teeth and health.

I asked my mom (who has a 1 yr old yorkie) whether to get a dental bone for ralfie and her eyes widened and she said NOOOOO hehe apparently she had the same diarrhea episode you experienced. I like the small rawhide chews (they're controversial, I supervise and take them away when they begin to get shredded and nasty) and also the all natural bully sticks (they are 100% digestible). His favorite is a rawhide shaped like a shoe- its the only shoe I encourage him to play with! Hope this helps!

Do you ever stop to thing what in the world could they have put on those bully sticks to keep them from rotting? Some stick so bad you can't stand it!! I don't think those or rawhid is a good idea at all. The all natural is best and they LOVE those little leg bones and they are so good for their teeth.

I have given mine denta sticks and they have also caused loose stool. I had no idea they were not 100% digestable. I usually just give mine flossies. All three of them love them.

What is a Leg Bone and what is a flossie? I just took Sassy's Dentabone away from her. I haven't had the diarrhea problem but no point in tempting a chance for it, eh?

It's just amazing what they sell for dogs. Most of which isn't worth
the money! I bought just about everything out there for Buddy when
he was a pup. He was a cronic chewer and needed something to chew.
Rawhides, denta bones, flossies, nylabones all made him sick or gave
him diahrea. Spent a small fortune on stool sample testing at the vet's
until I realized it was something he was eating. Finally figured it out
and he now only get a natural bone purchased from the pet store without
the marrow of course. It's the old fashioned way and the best way.
Hope your pup feels better soon.
Try some boiled chicken and white rice until his stool gets firmer.

I had given all my dogs a dentabone a few years ago and every single one of them got diareah with peices of the dentabone in it.
At first I panicked and thought OMG my dogs have worms took stool samples into my vet and while I was doing this it occured to me that I had given them the dentabone and that was what was in the poop

My dog had loose stool the next day only, but it lasted all day pretty much. He got no treats, only water and his regular food after that for a few days and he was fine. no more dentabones for him though! My other dog was fine with it though, he ate it and nothing happened with him.

I had given Pita a sparerib bone last week and by the next morning there was nothing but a nub left. I took that away from her...then she had a belly ache and then the loose stools started. They still haven't stopped, goin on 4 days now.

So even natural bones can be a hazard I guess.

Default denta bones

My dogs also got diarreah from the stupid bones, and all those other bones they sell at the pet store. I don't give them anything like that anymore. Just a kong with a biscuit in it.
