| Think my dog has got Diabeties We have a 12 year old yorkie bitch called Lucy. Over the last couple of months she's lost alot of weight and has been drinking lots of water and urinating in the house ( something she has never ever done before ). We just thought it was old age because her appetite is good. Its only this morning that we relised something was wrong because Lucy fell down our stairs and when we checked to see if she was okay we noticed she was going blind as her pupils where a whitey blue colour , ive looked on the internet today and seen that these are the signs of diabeties. Im absolutely gutted because I should have known this earlier due to seeing her go worse. Im taking her to the vets 1st thing in the morning. Ive read up about diabeties today and it seems a dog can live a normal life with 2 injections a day , do you think her sight could get better once we get insulin into her. Im now feeling really gilty because I should of done something earlier Has anyone else got a dog that as been through this. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I know diabetes and so many other diseases can be easily controlled with meds. My 10 year old Pom was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism and meds have gotten her back to normal. Good luck

| I have an almost 13 yr old Bichon who was diagnosed last January ( of 06' ). It was similar for us, he lost a lot of body weight in a short time was urinating and drinking alot. I had no idea dogs could be diabetic. He had been starting to lose his sight and now he only has about 5% vision. Anyway, once we got him regulated on the insulin, he started to act like his old self again and has adapted very well to loss of sight. I think it is harder on us than on them. The first month or so was hard, getting him to eat, and testing his blood glocose (at the vet) to find the proper dosage of insulin. But, he is doing very well. If you have any questions about it pm me or check out this site for canine diabetics: http://p090.ezboard.com/fpetswithdiabetescaninediabetes

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i don't think she'll get her eye sight back with a regulated dose of meds. there is obviously something wrong with her. I just hope it is diabetes and not kidney disease. At least with diabetes you can control it. Good luck at your vet visit.
