Yorkie Post Pregnancy Problems! HELP!! Hello Everyone! I am new here and I am currently frantic. I have a yorkie named Chyna who is going to be 7 years old next month. In November she had a run-in with a male poodle and ended up pregnant. This was completely unplanned. We have never had puppies before. My dog has a phobia of the vet since we took her there when she was 4 years old and the vet dislocated her leg and then denied it. Big drama. Since then my dog does not leave our house. Cars make her re-live the experience that she just gets sick in it. We have her groomer come to our house and make house visits. So as you can see we did not take her to the vet, we were too afraid she would have a miscarriage or something. She gave birth to a litter of 5 on Thursday. On Friday one of the two small and weak ones died. Saturday the second one died. Sunday, we were startled to find a dead puppy in her bed. It turns out she gave birth to another one 3 DAYS LATER; a dead puppy. She ate the placenta though and the umbilicle chord. Later that night (tonight!) she gave a birth to yet ANOTHER DEAD PUPPY. We are almost certain that we did see the afterbirth come out. She did eat some of the stuff but we removed the dead puppy and as much as we could. I have a big yorkie, I'm not too familiar with sizes, she weighs about 14 pounds, more when she was pregnant. She's not obese or anything, she's just very long. The vet always said she had never seen such a big yorkie, but she is pure. I can't imagine this is normal but I worry about the things she ingested. No animal hospital is open at this time and I don't know if anyone is online and knows about any of this but will this contaminate her milk? We still have a litter of 3 that are healthy and getting more active everyday. HELP PLEASE.

I am so very sorry for your problems -- it sounds like you have a genuine EMERGENCY! I would suggest finding an emergency vet and get your little mama and her surviving pups there immediately. Something isn't right and you stand a good chance to loose Mom and all the babies. Please hurry!!!!! Start calling the vets and see if SOMEONE has an emergency vet on duty. Let the puppies nurse.

Thank you for replying.. I have looked but there are no emergency vets opened at this time. It is 11:16PM. My dog is fine though. She did not seem phased by any of it. She did not even have contractions when passing the puppies today. I'm just really worried because there is nothing I can do. I really think she just had way too many puppies for a dog of her size and age. It's scary. There were 7 puppies. That just seems so unheard of to me. The puppies are nursing.

Please have her checked out asap-- dead puppies retained for two days is a recipe for disaster and infections which can develop very quickly with disasterous results. I wish you the very best.....

| She needs to get to a vet asap. Decaying puppies inside is not good, there could still be more in there. I think this can contaminate her milk, but Im not sure. Her uterus can become infected and rupture killing her. A breeder friend of mine (not yorkie) had this happen to one of her girls and she had to be spayed ASAP, the breeder had to nurse the pups. Call any animal university hospital, Call university of Penn right now for advice Emergencies: 215.746.V911 (215.746.8911) 24 hours a day You need to take care of this asap

Eating the placenta is the way nature helps the uterus contract back down and prevents hemmorhage. However, when something dies it starts decomposing. With a human mother, carrying a dead fetus can cause coagulopathies. (prevents clotting of the blood). That can be a REAL danger for hemorrhage. At the very least watch her bleeding VERY carefully. Somehow, someway you will have to find a vet if the bleeding is very much. The other pups nursing will also help the uterus to contract and help with bleeding, so them nursing is real good. Watch the girth of her abdomen. If it's filling with blood inside, you have to know it and get her help. Besides hemmorhage, I would another big problem would be infection. Watch her temperature. Infection, untreated can lose your baby to you. The last thing I can think of, yet not least important, is Are there any other fetuses or placentas left? I would think the only sure way to know that is for a vet to examine and possibly ultrasound or xray her. SOMEthing made her hold those last two puppies. Who is to say that is all there is. With the DIRE results of the three aforementioned things, I would be spastic to get my baby to a vet. At the very least first thing in the morning, I would definitely have her checked by a vet. Three dangers I can see: 1- Hemmorhage 2- Infection 3- Retained products of conception All of those are life threatening. Please have her checked and treated AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Let us know how she is doing and good luck. By the way.. I am NO breeder. I just know about having human babies!

I called the vet I found in the phonebook; he was about half asleep. He first began to tell me that 5 puppies was too much for her to have and then when I told him she had 2 more he was in disbelief. He said she should be fine till tommorow and then for us to come see him. This did not convince me. I called the Penn University Animal Hospital that Chrissy suggested; they were a lot more reassuring. She said that as long as Chyna was moving around (meaning not just laying down since it happened) and she's not bleeding that she should be fine. She said its very unlikely the milk is contaminated. She suggests we call the vet tommorow and see if he will look at her; to see how she wakes up. She is moving around though. I mean not long after she went outside for a couple minutes and then came back in and ate like nothing happened. There is no bleeding; I checked her a couple minutes ago. Is there blood in the afterbirth. I've never seen it. What's it look like? I think what came out after the last puppy was afterbirth but I'm squeemish and looked away as my mother was removing the dead puppy but my dog ended eating some of the puddle left behind.
