| Hoku has a heart murmur:( Picked Hoku up today and she did so well on the long drive home. Once we got home she used the pee pad and ate and played and was a little doll. Then we took her to the vet. She says she has a grade 4-5 heart murmur and needs an echocardiogram to see how bad it really is. I am so crushed! The breeder says she'll do whatever I want so we've decided that she will pay for the echocardiogram and if the murmur is really bad that I will return Hoku and wait for another female puppy out of a future litter. I am so torn, I don't know that I can give her up

| Thank you all for your support. Will schedule the echocardiogram and wait for the results before I decide what I'm going to do. She is such a little sweetheart and has gotten so attached to me already and vice versa

| I am so terribly sorry. I know how excited you have been but hopefully it won't be something that can't be easily dealt with and little Hoku will be OK. We will be praying for her and for you. Please keep us updated.

| My baby had a heart murmur when I got him home as well... funny thing is the breeder had a clean bill of health for both my pups when I picked them up! My vet was the one who found it. She told that it was not too bad and most puppies grow out of them by 1 year of age, usually around 6 months. At 6 months he still had it... she told me I could never breed him, so I got him fixed. He had his 1 year check up the other day and his vacs and his murmur has closed up and is gone! I don't know what grade it was but has your vet mentioned that its common and may go away on its own as the pup grows up? |

I don't think I would jump to an echocardiogram too quickly. I would see another Vet familiar with Yorkies for their opinion. Most Vets who do not know the breed, do stupid stuff because they don't know. Is your breeder close by? Can you find a Vet that other Yorkie breeders use? | |

| Well, we went to another vet yesterday and also to the specialist and had the echocardiogram done. Little Hoku does have a murmur and it is not a 'slight' one that will heal on it's own However, it may not get worse and she may be able to live a fairly normal life - the chances are 50/50 at this point. We will redo the echocardiogram when she is a year old and they will be able to tell from that if it is worsening or not. The breeder is being very supportive and has signed paperwork stating that Hoku has a murmur and that because of that she will give me another puppy at or around the time that Hoku passes on. I am determined to give Hoku the best life she can have, no matter how short it may be. She is still my 'bright star', perhaps more like a 'shooting star' but a star in my eyes nonetheless. Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement and support. I have been so wrapped up in the initial shock that I haven't taken new pics but will do that soon
