| Hacking While Asleep My new yorkie, Brissy, is hacking or dry wreching while she sleeps. She will be sleeping away and all of a sudden she wakes up to hack and then goes back to sleep. She does not do this while she is playing or any other time. She was checked by two vets and deemed healthy. Her parents do not have tracheal collapse nor do any of the other puppies. Her father was DNA checked for problems. She received her first shots over a week ago. She is otherwise perfect. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I work 12 hour shifts (my husband is at home with her) and I cannot take her to the vet until Thursday unless it's an emergency. Help 'cause I'm freaked!!! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | It may be Kennel Cough. Cali had that for 3 months and it was mostly when she went to sleep or first waking up. Antibiotics will help prevent it from developing into pneumonia. I would try and get her to the vet soon. Good luck.

| Luna had that cough also, right after she got the bordatella vaccine She ended up with a horrible respiratory infection that needed two rounds of antibiotics to clear up She's fine now. I'd talk to the vet about this, don't let it get worse. If your vet won't listen, or does the "wait and see" with you, you might want to consider a second opinion or new vet. Good luck and I hope it's nothing.

| I bought Ginger (in the photo) 17 Dec and she also does this. Especially at night was the worse. She is 11 weeks now and did not do this before her shots. I need to check to ensure she received the KC vaccine. Anyways, I took her to the VET last Thurs and she gave her antibiotics and cough pills. I only heard her a few times Monday. However since the weather is crazy here I quit taking her out to GO now and she is finding the piddle pads regularly. She is sooo smart, I was really panicking before the Vet. There is another thread about this and I see we are not the only ones with a Yorkie coughing. My 13 yr old female I cannot remember her doing this unless she swallows a hard piece of kibble etc.... |

| I know vaccines are important but my dogs stay inside unless going out to go. We live on over an acre also so not a lot of dogs come into our yards. Anyways, I was potty training Ginger outside and sometimes it was cold. There is so many things a cough can come from so I think the Vet did the right thing with the antibiotics (even though I really don't like them unless absolutely necessary). We finish up the meds Saturday. |

| The same thing happened to my Yorkiepoo puppy Kobe (15 weeks). I took him to the vet last week and he was given KC vaccine and this weekend he had a random hacking cough. I took him to the vet yesterday and they gave him antibiotics. -lsf |

| My husband said that he did not hear her cough all day today while I was at work. Her grandma was over to meet her and had she hacked she would be at the vet post haste. Hope it's over. Thanks all. I'm going to take her to the vet anyway on Thursday but it is comforting knowing that I am not alone. |

| I figured it out!! I figured out what was causing the hack. Brissy is most playful first thing in the morning and then again in the evening. While observing her playing in her outdoor pen at night I noticed her rooting in the grass and dirt with her nose. I mean she was really going at it. I think she was getting dirt in her sinuses then wanting to hack it out. She figured it out herself because she stopped this behavior and the hack stopped too!! Yea!! Smart puppy!! |

| Ginger does what Brissy does also, sticks her nose into the grass and dirt ( I guess her nose goes down there). I still dont know if this is the cause or not, her antibiotics are finished tomorrow or next. Thanks for info on new meds. We will finish of course this round and see. I noticed last night she coughed again. I hate dosing her if it is not bacterial though.

| Well Ginger seemed fine for a while but tonight she started really coughing. My wife called me at my night job and said she was getting bad. She moved her out of the laundry then decided it may be better to leave her in there but took out the laundry detergent. I remember when I bought my canary the breeder told me not to leave him in the laundry. Since the VET could not determine what was actually wrong with Ginger, we are still in the dark. She was also seen for her last shots also but she wasnt coughing like this. WIll keep an eye on her again. Its just the way she seems something is cought in her throat like so many posts here about reverse sneezing etc.
