Unhappy collapse trachea from vomiting?

Well, little Enzo has had a rough few months. First 3 or 4 were great. Then we took him recently for his neutering and the vet did a blood test on him. Turns out it was a good thing they did the $30 OPTIONAL blood test, as they diagnosed him with a liver shunt. So now we get to look forward to tons of bills for getting that figured all out. At least he still acts like our little baby though.

Or I should say "did" act that way. Until the other night. Was chewing on one of his treats, "Barx". About an hour later he vomited pretty badly. Then started making the dry heaving sound. That night, he did it ALL night, to the point where I didnt sleep a bit. Just kept up with him massaging his belly and throat to try to help him. We live way out in the country, so driving an hour in to the E.R. Vet wasnt really an option. Plus I could tell he was breathing somewhat alright, it was just the heaving and "honking" noise. I could tell it made him uncomfortable though.

So we called the vet the next morning and they basically said "yeah it was probably from the vomiting."

Ok so...that was Tuesday night. Today is Saturday and he's still doing it. Think its still from the vomiting? I am starting to wonder about how much we can trust our vet that we go to.

Anyways, would like your experience, or if this sounds like it is worse than the vet said?

Thanks much

First of all I would ask the vet to see him...I wouldnt' let this go on...something doesn't sound right....Is he eating/drinking ok? I have never heard of the treat that you mentioned...I gave the girls a denta delicious bone once...made Lillie sick...she threw up until there was nothing left in her stomach...she was about 3 months old when I gave her this...I now (under the suggestions of the wonderful YT members) use bully sticks...they are 100% digestible and they can't break off pieces so nothing can get lodged...

If he is still dry heaving I would insist to your vet you want him seen...Any GOOD vet won't question your concern...if your vet doesn't want to see him I would find another vet.

I agree. I'd let a vet check him out. Doesn't sound right to me. Even if that is all that's going on, I'd feel better having him checked out.

I'd certainly let another vet see your baby! Something isn't right here, and needs to be found out, and treated.

it could be a CT, does the cough sound kind of raspy and does he hack at the end? have your vet check, and be sure to have him do an x-ray, then have a good look at the trachea.

Even if the coughing/wheezing stops, CT is a chronic disease, so its better to check to make sure. Better to know now before something happens worse in the long run right? But good job on watching over your puppy and trying to relax/calm him whenever he started an 'episode'

also here's what my dog sounded like with a CT (its a video that I put up in another thread) http://www.dropshots.com/day.php?use...1&ctime=144216

Sad

I notice you did not mention that the vet put your puppy on a special diet until he gets surgery for his liver shunt.

If you are still giving him his regular dog food and treats, then that's what is causing the vomiting.

My 9 1/2 yorkie has CT and there several things that can make it act up, stress, over weight, dry air ( summer fires, heat or home heater ), or over excited.

Right now since its cold at nights I have the heater on and that can dry up her bronchi's, so I have to put on a soft mist humidifier to replace the moister in the air and keep her nasals open and bronchi's.

Before I found out about the humidifier, I would jump out of bed with her and quickly go outside for a few minutes so the fresh air can open up everything for her to be able to breath. She now takes medication for her bronchitis and sometime when needed some noise drop's.

I hope all is well soon.

Best Wishes,

Default Maybe....

I am no expert and am only just learning to deal with Collapse Trachea with Moe, but from my limited understanding of this situation, the weak tracheal "membrane" and what I call support rings, cause Im no expert, are already there, there are what our vet calls triggers, that sets the collapse trachea, Honking and such off, so it may be possible, that the vomiting was violent enough to the trachea, as you have trouble breathing when you vomit, to have "triggered" the response of the collapsed trachea, so not the actual cause of the situation as in making him have collapsed trachea, but more the catalyst that set it off.For Moe it can be something so simple as my hairspray, which now I have to use away from him, as it triggers his problem.Be sure to find out from your vet what level of Collapsed trachea your baby has, as there are varying degrees of it and it was a great comfort to me to see Moe only has the mild version of it.
