| poorly ears Could anyone give me some advice. My little yorkie, called Trafford has an ear infection. He has been given some Otomax drops from the vet along with antibiotics and pain killers. Whatever i do to try and get the drops in he goes mad. He just wont let me near. Ive tried everything, i think.... The vet says that the drops are important and if i cant get them in Trafford may have to have an operation and have them washed out. I really want to avoid this, so any suggestions would be welcome..Thanks |

first - WRAP that baby up in a towel like a mummy. Make it nice and tight with his feet inside the towel and make sure it isn't choking his neck lol - (I have to wrap Cheri like this to do her nails) 2nd - have someone help you if you can and hold his head STILL - if you don't have help - then I would just sit where you can hold him with your legs AND arms ....do a Wrestling move on him where he is totally immobilized. 3rd. This is when you tell him YOU ARE THE BOSS and way bigger ! 4th - Drop a few drops in (5) and GENTLY massage the ear - if this hurts him just hold his head if you can - and try to keep him still while the medicine gets in there - ottomax is thick - it takes a minute to get into the ear canal. and if he's freaking out - try a treat or talking to him - but hold tight till you get the other ear done. If it's REALLY a fight - do one ear - then when you can catch him after he's done being pissed at you - do the other ear - Try to not make it traumatic and you'll probably have to keep moving the medicine cause he'll catch on to that really quick and be in the wind when you reach for it - hope this helps !! I usually sit and rub Tessas ears really gently till I think she's got enough in there cause they'll shake their heads so hard it flies out. Cockers are way more laid back than yorkies about this stuff - but this is like doing nails - you've got to do it and will resort to drastic Military measures lol - after - get you a nice drink and put your feet up

| Hi. I have a beagle-mix with chronic ear infections. He has been getting drops in his ears 2-3 times a day for years. He still hates it. He's bigger than your yorkie, but...he used to fight and even tried to bite me. The vet wanted me to use a muzzle, but I wasn't anxious to do that. So, I took him to Ginger's trainer and this is what we worked out: When I walk him, I keep his leash on him when we come in(he seems to be more subdued and less likely to fight when leashed). I keep the drops by the door, and just hang on to him those times when I want to do his ears (it's not everytime we go outside, just 2 times a day). Then, I hold onto his collar (but the harness would do) with one hand, and straddle his body with my knees. I don't squeeze, just used my knees to hold him still and facing away from me. Then, with the other hand (it is possible) I fold back an ear and put in the drops. With a little one, you could actually kneel on your knees. Again, you are not squeezing, just creating a space for them where it's hard for them to turn around. When we first started this, I really had to hold on pretty tight, now he just knows whats coming. He just stands there and lets me do what needs to be done. Also, in the beginning I had to hold my ground. Once I gave him the idea that fighting would get him out of it he would've had no reason not to do battle. We've gotten really good at it over the years and the whole thing takes less than a minute. Oh yeah, as soon as we're done, he gets a treat! He does so well that occasionally I think I can just reach down, flip back his ears and place the drops. Oddly, if I don't follow the above routine EXACTLY he still fights and tries to snap. It took some time, but we worked it out. Another advantage to having a specific routine for drops...before I started doing it the same way everytime, he'd started to get snippy anytime I reached for him. He never knew which time I'd be using the drops. Now we can snuggle and play and he never seems nervous that I'm getting ready to do his ears. Good luck! You'll get there!

| Uh, what kind of food does he dearly love? I'd use that as the "bait". My dogs will do anything for a couple of cheerios. Good luck with this! |
