Update on Piper Well, I took her to the specialist for the ultra sound. He was looking for her shunt & couldnt see it. Come to find out the DR. that I had the appointment with hasn't done many and really couldn't see one. He's only had his degree for a little over 2 years. So they have me coming back in a week or 2 to see another specialist that has been doing & reading ultra sounds for years. Needless to say I was upset. He didn't charge me for the ultra sound, just for the consultation. He did say from her Bile Acid test running so high, he did think it was a shunt. He also said that it might take another test to determine it. Some radio active test, that I would have to drive 6 hours away to get it for her. I'll find out more about that test if needed. So I'm still on hold until I get another appointment. Just wanted all to know, were still hanging in there. Thanks for all your prayers. Debbie

Probably talking about a radiograph which is the best way to positively identify a liver shunt without surgery. It's possible the liver shunt is within the liver itself and can't be seen with an ultrasound. Taken from a very informative site on liver shunts: http://www.geocities.com/class_act_k...ver_shunt.html Liver Imaging: RADIOGRAPHY - Invasive - A dye is injected into the spleen and the dye is tracked through Radiograph through the blood vessels. A blood vessel bypassing the liver can easily be seen on the image. This is the only universally accepted method of confirming a shunt, short of major surgery, it however is extremely invasive and is a poor choice for "screening" purposes. I believe the sentence at the end is only if the bile acid and blood tests do not indicate a problem since the site says ultrasound is unreliable and this is the only way to tell for sure, short of major surgery.

Thankyou Lacy's Mom. That is a great site. Wonderful information. I have looked at several, but the information on this site makes it easier to explain to others. I made a copy of it. I didn't look at sites for Yorkies & liver shunt. The vet said it was more common in Maltese. Piper being both, I though it probably was the maltese in her. I just looked up liver shunt in dogs, and some of the sites I didn't understand. Thanks again
