| Is Benadryl ok? My little baby, Sancho got a flea. He's never had them before and he's two. I got rid of them but he still can't stop scratching so I think he may be allergic. Someone suggested giving him Benadryl for the itch but I'm scared to do that. Has anyone used this on their baby before? He's about 7 lbs of itch and scratch and its been going on for several days. Help!!!

| take to vet they will most likely give a cortozone or however you spell it shot . i would at least call them to ask about benadryl but i tdon't think most human meds are ok for dogs espically smaller ones.

| I took Sawyer to the vet yesterday for the same thing. I never see a flea, but my vet said one bite can drive them up the walls. He prescribed childrens benedryl, one half cc every 8 hours. Sawyer weighed a whooping 3 pounds and 1 ounce at 17 weeks, so your baby is bigger. My vet said he would rather try the benedryl than a shot first. It hasn't made Sawyer drowsy or anything, but it does seem to be helping with the itch. Good luck!

| There is also this stuff that is a Benadryl gel type thing. It is a liquid antihistamine used to treat poison ivy, and smells decent. It is topical too, so no worries there. |

| Tatum got into something the other weekend while we were out of town that gave her whelps and made her itch like crazy. My vet told me to give her 12 ml of children's Benadryl. That sure seemed like a lot to me but the vet said that it is safe to give a dog 2 ml per pound every 8 hours. Since Tatum was having a pretty serious reaction to whatever she got into, he said it was a good idea to give her the maximum dosage (2 ml per lb. = 12 ml because she's 6 pounds). That seems like a lot because you definitely wouldn't give a 6 lb. baby that much but this is the dosage for dogs. I've heard of dogs that are on it for other allergies and they get a much smaller dosage just because it's a "maintenance" type thing for them. It's still safest to call your vet and ask his opinion..... just wanted to tell you the recommended dosage I was told. Good luck!

| Wouldn't be without it I've had 2 life threatening experiences where Benadryl has saved a dog. Once, an adult female found a toad at night on the back patio and just had to put her mouth on it. Her eyes rolled back, she foamed at the mouth and was going into convulsions. While my husband was grabbing his clothes and car keys, I grabbed the Benadryl, and she responded to it almost immediately. She was fine the next day. Another time, an 8 week old pup ate a bee while playing in the yard. He had an extreme reaction to it. Again, the vet credited Benadryl with saving his life. This was about 7 years ago and he's just as healthy as can be. (lives with my grand-daughter). I seldom use it, but I err on the side of caution on the dosage. I start with 1 ml per pound, and figure I can always give 1 more. I'm glad to hear your baby is okay. |
