Default Poor wittle Oscars

Poor Oscar is not having a fun time at all tonight... Around 6pm he started doing what I thought was just the reverse sneeze - kindof bobbing his head in and out as he licked his lips/stuck his tongue in and out, etc. He wasn't making any coughing sounds though, it was quiet. I dont know if I'm explaining this right... Every once in a while he would start making like a gagging sound I guess (definitely NOT a goose honk type sound). So, this has been going on for... about 4 hours now I guess. But I took him outside and he ran around and played like normal - actually seemed to stop the weird breathing thing while we were outside, but resumed when we came back in. He ate tonight too with no problems. He's been sleeping off and on and when he does get to sleep, he breathes normally. When he wakes up, he does the weird breathing thing.
I'm wondering if there might be something stuck in his throat? But if there was, I would have thought that he would be coughing and eventually throw up to get it out...
I'm worried about him... and I really hate the ER vet around here (it's far, but the only one around) - I don't trust the staff (they're the ones who mis-diagnosed Ruthie before saying she had pink eye when she had a corneal laceration). Anyways... does anyone have any thoughts or experience with this?

HOLY CRAP! Just as I sent that last one, Oscar started coughing, like he was trying to get something out - I had done a search on here for "trouble breathing" and came up with a thread where someone's dog had been 'gagging' and someone else posted about a time where there dog had actually swallowed a chunk of long hair that was still attached to the dog's face, and it was basically just stuck in their throat. Even after reading this, it never occurred to me that Oscar's hair might be long enough to do this!!! And lo and behold, what do I find when I check his mouth while he's coughing? A BIG CHUNK OF HIS HAIR! EWWW, BUT THANK GOD!!! Now he's fine! I can't believe it! I was seriously panicked! THANK GOD FOR YT, I LOOOVE THIS PLACE. I'm so glad I didn't rush him to an ER vet, I woulda felt like such a dope!

YAY! Oscar's fine, he's sleeping peacefully now... lol

Our last Yorkie did that once and we had a hard time finding the cause. We finally figured out he had some of his long muzzle hair inside his mouth along his teeth/gums and he had swallowed it down his throat. He couldn't swallow it completely and he couldn't cough it up so he just kept trying. We trimmed his muzzle hair after that!

Also, while we lived in Florida Riley chewed on an oak leaf and swallowed a piece of it...oak leaves in Florida are like leather! He had it stuck in his throat and we tried everything to get it to go down. He finally either swallowed it or coughed it up. Riley would also sleep fine but cough when he was awake.

Good luck...I hope Oscar will be o.k.

That was me! Too funny...I was typing that story again while you were typing what you found! I'm glad he's o.k. now.

That is just nuts.. seriously I am just blown away right now. To think of the money I could have ended up spending just by walking into the ER vet. And what if THEY hadn't figured out what it was and had gone on to do x-rays or something... eesh...

Like I said.. YT is a lifesaver.. I really never would have thought to check for that.

It's funny how quickly he fell asleep after I pulled it out and cut it off... It was like 'thanks mom... zzzzz"

Glad you were able to fix his problem. That happened to me with my last Yorkie, Gracie who had a really long full coat. I didn;t know why she kept swallowing hard and coughing. I took her in and I was so embarrassed when they pulled this long wad of her hair, that was still attached too her mouth. She had a sore throat for a few days. Now I check Cali every time I groom her.

Glad you found the cause and saved some money too! My Mom's Maltese does this quite often and she also has to watch the ear hairs because they grow down the canal.
