Default new born pup very small and can't latch on

The last born of 5 puppies is having a hard time latching on. Hes tiny and he was the last born but he isnt crying as much as the other ones. He makes weak noises and moves around, but not so much. The mom licks him and keeps him warm just like the others. Im so scared for him. I don't want to lose him. I will call my vet first thing in the morning. What can I do?? He ate a little earlier today, but only with the help of humans....he can't find the nipple...so we have to open his mouth and put it in him and then he sucks very weakly.

I'm no expert but I do know that you really can't let him go long before he will be in real trouble. I would give him alittle karo syrup to give him a boost in energy and then make sure he gets on there (even with your help) every 2 hours. Tomorrow you can buy some formula or find a recipie to make your own and suppliment him if need be. But whatever you do make sure he gets it some way or another.

Default too late

When I posted the message I researched for a while and found a recipe for formula that helped another yorki owner. I went to jewel at midnight and purchased everything I needed. By the time i mixed it, it was too late. He was stiff and cold and I tried to revive him but couldn't. I cried for about an hour. He was only one day and a couple hours old. I don't know how people bear with losing children because I know I will be sad for a long time about this little puppy. I have 4 more, 2 girls and 2 boys. one boy and one girl are also pretty small but they are eating mommy's milk. I was up until now..3:30 am....to make sure they all ate. the smallest girl which im also worried about is eating, but i have to help her out finding the nipple. She sucked on it for about 30 mins...is that normal??? Now she's sleeping. I hope that the rest of these little sweeties will be healthy. I'm so sad though.

I am so sorry you lost your little one. As sad as it is, sometimes these things are meant to be. I know if I lost one like that, I would be totally devastated. That's one of the reasons I had Roxy spayed. As much as I wanted her to have a litter, I know from all I have learned on YT, that there are so many things that can go wrong, and if something did, I would be a basket case. It doesn't matter what age they are, the loss of any furbaby can rip our hearts apart. You did everything you could for your little boy, but God must have needed a tiny puppy at the Rainbow Bridge. My heart goes out to you and I will pray for your babies' continued growth and health. (((HUGS)))

So sorry for the one you lost. Most likely the baby was premature and not all was formed right on the inside. The one that your concerned about - have you noticed any milk coming out of her nose? Just keep a close eye on her and continue to help her locate a nipple. They grow so fast I'm sure she will be fine in a couple of days. Just make sure she doesn't wander off and get cold. Hope all is going well today.

Awww, I'm so sorry for the loss of the baby. I know you were trying to do everything you could.

Don't take that stuff you bought back yet, you might need it for one of the others.

I don't know much about raising babies, but I know Neutra-Cal has been great when I first got Venus. The lady that sold her to me, included it, along with some food she'd been eating..

I'm so glad I had the neutra cal, that stuff has been a life saver for me, as I wouldn't have known what to do, when Venus got picky, and got shots and wasn't feeling well.

I wished everyone included a tube of that stuff when selling a pup!

Good luck with the rest of the litter!

I just saw your thread and am so sorry.

How are the pups doing today? The little one you spoke of, is she eating better yet? While nursing, do you ever notice any milk coming out of her nose? One problem with a pup not nursing could be a cleft pallate.

Also, if your in need of a recipe for weak pups, I used this recipe for 13 weeks. Its high claorie and worked wonders for me:

1 can of evaporated milk
1 table spoon real mayo
1 cup of whole plain Yogaurt (not low fat)
1/2 tablespoon of karo surup
1 egg yolk

Mix all together with a wisk and store refridgerated for up to 7 days. Warm formula like you would for a babies bottle.

Also, I've had best results using human premie nipples. The bottle they sell for pets just don't work well.

Good luck!

I'm so sorry about the loss of your baby. I went thru the same exact experience in April. I thought my heart was going to remain permately broken. Time is healing the wound slowly, I will always have my baby in my heart. Take care of the other pups. God is watching over your little one.

Default thank you all

Thank you all for your kind words. I feel sooooo sad about the death of the little boy, but i know he was premature and he was super super tiny with little movement since the moment he was born. The rest of the litter is fine. I'm not though because I wake up every two hours to make sure the smallest girl is eating. She is half the size of the biggest baby which worries me. And all the others gained weight since saturday (thier birthday). The girl looks like she gained a little but shes still short and skinny. Here is what is weird...she eats the most and the longest out of all of them so I thought she should gain alot sooner. But it's not happening. She likes to suck on the nipple for about 20-30 mins every hour and half to two hours but sometimes she falls asleep at the nipple which is sooo cute, so I let her sleep for 2 -5 mins and then I pat her or massage her head or back and she wakes up right away and starts sucking away! And she moves her arms against mommy's skin, which shows that she has some strenght. None of them can fully walk on all fours yet. They kinda crawl/slither/roam and fall around on each other. They use thier arms, but not so strong with back legs...she is the weakest wth back legs but she uses them but they kinda wobble. She crawls on her mom's hair and likes when her mom licks her. She's a good eater and nothing comes out of her nose. Does that look good?? Iwant to make sure shes going to survive...the vet looked at her and said that if she makes it in 8 days then she will make it all the way. That is why we're taking shifts and holding her at the nipple (she tends to fall off sometimes and the bigger babies steal her nipple). She has a hard time finding the nipple and getting her little mouth on it..so i have to help her open her mouth and put it in her and then she naturally sucks and even makes little cute noises sometimes. So does this look good ??? How long do I have to help her and wake up every two hours of the night and help her during the day??? This doggie makes me very tired but i love her....but i don't think I want to have real human babies from this experience....waking up in the middle of the night and feeding and worrying....very overwhelming. From this entire experience, I love her so much that I want to keep her but I already have her older brother and sister from a diff litter so I can't have that many dogs.

I would suggest supplimenting her feeding with using the recipe I posted here on your thread. Keep having her eat on her mom but maybe give her a bottle as well. The recipe I posted here for you is a high calorie formula.

Good luck!!!!! She'll be in my thoughts!!!!

I'm sorry for your loss. It's very difficult to loose a puppy, especially a young one. I've been breeding yorkies for six years and sometimes, no matter what you do, they don't make it. I know this is after the fact but next time your female is ready to give birth, make sure to have a puppy bottle and pre-mixed supplemental puppy milk on hand and a heating pad. Our Reggie gave birth to 6 puppies back on March 27th. The little boy died on April 3rd and then we lost Reggie on April 4th leaving me with 5 baby girls to hand raise. When I took them for their 6 week check up, my vet smiled from ear to ear. He was pleasantly surprised that they all made it. They are six and half months old now, three of them are living with YT members and the other two we kept. I know I had some heavenly intervention dealing with the death of my Reggie and determined to see her little girls survive and grow up. I'm sorry you had to go through this but unfortunately, that's the way it is sometimes. A couple of years ago we lost a pup during one of the coldest spells of winter and the ground was too hard to bury him. My husband came up with the idea of using PVC pipe cut to length and sealed on both ends. I then I use a marker and write on his/her name, date of birth and date of death. Reggie was too big but hubby did come up with a pipe but we couldn't get the ends big enough to seal it so he was going to cement the ends and bury her. I couldn't deal with that so I had her cremated and she sits beside me at the computer, just like she always did.
May God be with you and your little ones.
