Giardia Question...Is it transmissable to humans? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

My stepdaughter is stating she does not feel well, and I have a feeling her Mom will say she caught Giardia from Sophie. Sophie has given her kisses, well she has given almost everyone kisses. I have heard she can give it another dog through kisses or coming in contact with her poop. Does anyone know???

Soph was on meds for this, but she may still have it.

It is contagious for humans. My pom had it when we got him and the vet said we could get it, but none of us did. Just make sure to wash your hands after being with dog. I also washed my poms feet and tooshie every time he came in from being outside to potty. I cleaned up his poo every time he went also, so no other dogs or people came in contact with it. I was a clean freak I only kept him in our kitchen until he was better, and I bleached everything he had come in contact with. He didn't get a whole lot of cuddles from us either until he was better. It is transmitted through the poo and I was afraid some of the bacteria would stick to his fur so I wanted to be sure no one got it. He was better in a couple of weeks.

It is possible for humans to get it. Sissy had a really bad case that took over a month of meds to get rid of, and no human living here got it, despite kisses every now and then.

I am keeping Soph sequestered with me, bleaching every thing, bathing her, and keeping an eagels eye on her! My vet never mentioned it was transmittable to humans!

Angel had Giardia when I first got her from the breeders. I was told it can pass from animals to humans and vice versa and that children are more susceptible to getting it. I was also a clean freak and mostly kept Angel in her pen until she was better. I wore gloves when cleaning her accidents and washed my hands all the time. I don't like kisses, but I was told to avoid them.

Practice good hygiene (washing hands frequently) and I'm sure you will be fine.

Yes, it is transmittable to humans, and I would just suggest keeping her away from the kitchen and washing your hands a lot. I myself got both Giahrdia and Coccidia in Mexico from a mango presumably grown using animal fertilizer and not washed well enough. It was miserable!!!
