| A Prayer for Sophie I am not sure if any of you know I inadvertantly bought her from a breeder in the Missouri area, well anyway, she came to me with Giardia and Coccidia. She was on two different meds to rid her of both. Well, she is off her antibiotics and she still has runny poop and not a terrific appetite. I will have to make another vet appointment and bring her in. It breaks my heart to see her still not feeling good. Part of the problem is I can not get her to stop eating her own poop, which I am sure is part of the problem. I can catch her sometimes, but not all. I tried Adolphs meat tenderizer so she would be repelled by her poop. Did not work. I just hope we can knock this bug out of her. I know it can be common in pups. I am just not sure how to keep her from reinfesting herself. Anyway, I am a little worried She is so precious and I have only had her a couple of weeks, and I have read other horror stories here and shared in the tears. I know we all love our little bundles and would hate for anything to happen to them. |

| Oh, give it some time. It's hard to fight, but it just takes some time for the antibiotics to work. It seems like I've read before that it is hard to get them over it, but it is by no means hopeless. Don't start feeling so down. I just know she'll be ok. You're nuts about her and take good care of her. That's a winning recipe for success!

| Definitely needs another round of meds and a trip to the vet. Since her good bacteria in her digestive tract is being compromised by the antibiotics she needs to be given good bacteria. Good bacteria can be found in yogurt, but with having diarrhea I would suggest just buying Benebac. It comes in tubes and you can buy it at petstores. I would also give her Pedialyte to restore the electrolyte balance caused by having diarrhea. Once opened Pedialyte only lasts for 48 hours so buy the single servings in the baby department. Also look for an immune system booster vitamin at the petstore since coccidia has to be overcome by their own immune system - the meds just keep it under control until the immune system can defeat it and with a weakened pup this sometimes takes a while. Sorry, you're going through this, but neither in itself is fatal, but dehydration is so really push the fluids. You can check for dehydration by "pinching" the skin at the scruff of the neck, it should spring back quickly, if it stays "tented" then she is dehydrated and your vet can give her an injection of fluids. Get well soon cheeto? Keep us updated and we'll keep her in our thoughts and prayers. |

| I'm so sorry your poor baby has to deal with both of these parasites!!! The giardia can be difficult to get rid of. Please take her back in if her stools are still runny - it can take a few doses of meds to get rid of. Make sure you disinfect all of her bedding, toys, food/water dishes and other areas she has lots of contact with. A bleach solution should be used to do this. It is also helpful to wipe her bum with a baby wipe when she poops to make sure she is clean. Try to keep a close watch on her behavior and you can usually tell when she is going to poop so she won't keep eating and reinfecting herself. They can become anorexic with the treatment for these conditions. Because her little tummy is most likely not going to feel well with all these meds, try some yogurt. I like the Activia by Dannon (I use the vanilla flavor) for the live, good bacteria it contains and Sissy gets 1/4 container for breakfast. You might also want to try boiling some chicken along with real long cooking white or brown rice for a while as well. Once the stools are no longer runny, you can either continue feeding her this and add some vegetables to the mix, or continue with dry kibble. Good luck to you. This can be very frustrating, but you need to make sure she eats and keep her area really clean till you get the all clear.

| Thanks Guys!! I called the vet this morning, and they said that the coccdia should be dead, killed with the antibiotics, that she should not reinfest herself. They also said to not really worry about the loose stools so much unless it is like water. I have an appointment next Monday for her rabies, but we went ahead and changed it to an appointment with the actual doctor. I also mentioned her congestion that she seems to have at night when she is sleeping, so we will also address that. She is so fast at eating her poop, I took a shower this morning, and had her in her pen and she pooped and ate it real quick, then of coure to add to all the fun, she stepped in it and got it all over the bottom of her pen, so she got another bath and I wiped everything down in her pen with a lysol disinfecting wipe. Thanks! |

Also, recommendations for all vaccines advise that the dog be 100% healthy and free from parasites. I would make sure this is the case before giving any vaccine. From www.marvistavet.com How is Coccidiosis Treated? We do not have any medicine that will kill coccidia; only the patient’s immune system can do that. But we can give medicines called “coccidiostats” which can inhibit coccidial reproduction. Once the numbers stop expanding, it is easier for the patient’s immune system to “catch up” and wipe the infection out. This also means, though, that the time it takes to clear the infection depends on how many coccidia organisms there are to start with and how strong the patient’s immune system is. A typical treatment course lasts about a week or two but it is important to realize that the medication should be given until the diarrhea resolves plus an extra couple of days. Medication should be given for at least five days total. Sometimes courses as long as a month are needed. | |
