| Constipated?Help! Diego is a 5.9lb 1 year and 2 mth old Yorkie. He is healthy and active. He has not pooped since Sunday afternoon. He may have had an over abundance of parmesan cheese on Sunday (everyone was feeding him pieces). Sunday evening we decided not to take any chances and take him to the animal hospital b/c he started shaking and gagging (as if he were going to vomit but couldn't). They took x-rays and all came back clear...they concluded he was constipated, the dr's could actually feel the poop in his tummy. They gave him an enima but very little came out of it. We took him home and figured the enima would kick in....nothing happened. We went back to the animal hospital yesterday and they gave him another enima plus prescribed a laxative...still NOTHING. His gums are pink, his nose is wet, his appetite is huge, he is active and drinking water but his belly seems full and he has not pooped. I am really concerned...does anyone have any advice for me? Has this happened to anyone? Am I being impatient? I would really appreciate your input. Thanks- Tamara |

| I would just start giving him a heaping teaspoon of pureed pumpkin - plain pumpkin without all the spices added for pie fillings - twice a day. I'm confused why the enema didn't work - and then the laxatives haven't produced anything - I don't think all things show up in x-rays - is it possible that he ate stuffing out of a toy or something like that? Also I would take him for brisk walks this will also help his digestive system to get moving. Keep us updated. |

| This is from marvistavet.com, but it does go on to say that sometimes an animal must be put under anesthesia and have the stools manually removed. One of the purposes of the colon (large intestine) is the storage of stool. Many pet owners become alarmed if the pet has not passed a stool in a few days, especially in a post-anesthetic situation. In fact, the colon can easily store several weeks worth of stool so if only a few days have passed it may be worthwhile to wait a little longer. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/cons...megacolon.html |

| Hi hun, Im sorry to hear that this is happening to your little one. Im thinking it must have definately been the cheese. I have read so many posts on here about how bad it is for our babies to eat "people food" . I know its hard not to give it to them because they love it so much, but from what Ive read and through some upsets with mine I have learned that we arent doing them any favors by giving it to them. I have quit giving them ANY people food at all after Bella got sick from people giving her scraps of this and that, and they are just so much healthier now because of it. Maybe you could try putting some of this stuff that makes their coat shiny in his food (vitaderm scratch and shed relief). I noticed that when I used a little of that in their food that their stools were looser. Good luck!
