| New member with a very big problem Hi Yorkie Lovers: I am so glad I found this website. I didnt' know where to turn. I have tried doggie chats and everything. And in there most people are just there to push you around. I should start by saying I have a Yorkie that will be 2 yrs on Sept.8, his name is Babybear. Well he had an accident 5 weeks ago this past Saturday. He jumped off my lap (two feet off the ground) and he yelped a yelp I will never forget. I looked down and picked him up. He was stiff as a board. Then he proceeded to go into a sezuire. He then stopped breathing. Well I am like two minutes from my vet so my husband start mouth to mouth on him and preformed it all the way to the vets. I ran in with Babybear asking for help now for them to help him. I was beside myself. The DR. came out about 10 minutes later and said they were doing all they could for him and he was breathing on his own. I was told to go home and they would be working on him until 1 o'clock it was now 10 o'clock. So I took my husband home and went back and waited in the waiting room I was staying like it or not. At 1 I went into the back with Babybear. The doctor said he had taken xrays and blood work. And Baby's blood work was much differant then it was in May. And that his neck was fine but he didnt' know why Baby could move his legs. But where he had a sezuire that , that might be the reason. And he may come out of it, but that Baby had a very bad liver shunt for his blood levels to be the way they were. That if Baby made it through the weekend that we would talk on Monday, but if things were the same that we should think about putting him to sleep. I should take him to an ER for the weekend so if he does die he will be taken care of. NOT. If something was going to happen to him he was going to be with me not a stranger. I was going to be the one that was holding my baby. So I took him home. I nursed him all Saturday, Saturday night, no change he still wasn't walking. Sunday still nothing so my husband and I cried and cried all weekend and we had made the decision that Monday morning I would call and have Baby put to sleep. Sunday night Baby started to get the sparkle back in his eyes.(I am sure you all know what I mean). The more Sunday night went on the more it seemed he could do. He was trying to move his back legs. So Monday morning came along and I made the call to the vet. I set the appointment up to have Baby put to sleep. Crying all the way. Then my inlaws came by to see Baby. Everyone kept saying to me to get a second oppoin. So I called and cancelled the appointment and made a appointment 50 miles away at a new ER. The owner is a specialist. Just what I needed. My baby still can't walk. can't eat or drink on his own. So I went to this ER and talked to the DR. He asked me a bunch of questions about what had happend and also asked me if Babybear was eating okay before this happend. I said yes he is a little pig. He said yes I noticed he weighs 15 pounds. He said that he wanted to take an xray to see if Baby had a broken neck. I told him his regular vet had done that and said it was all clear. The Dr said I think that is what it is. Well he knows better than me. So he took the xrays and came back out 10 minutes later and said yes it is a broken neck. It can be repaired with a 85 to 90 percent chance he will walk again. Wow I though. My husband is home sleeping and I can't make a decision about this on my own. The price of the surgery is between 3200.00 and 3900.00. This is money we don't have. What am I to do. So I asked the Dr if I could take Baby home with me and talk to my husband and call back later. He said yes and keep doing what you are doing except don't feed Baby anymore gatorade. It gave him the runs. I was always told that was good when they weren't eating. WRONG. So I came home and talked to my husband when he woke for work. How were we going to come up with this money? Well I tried care credit or creditcare. It is a credit card that will help with vet bills and more if you get approved. We got approved for the full amount. I called the ER right up and told them yes we were going to do it. They told me to bring Baby in the next day. Well that was a scary trip. I put Baby in the car. In a laundry basket with blankets all around him. I put him in the back seat, because my mother inlaw was going with me where I hadn't slept since 7am Saturday morning and here it was Tuesday afternoon. I put Baby in and was talking to my father inlaw beside the car and my mother inlaw kept saying he is turning around. I went to check Babybear and he went stiff again and stopped breathing again. So I gave him mouth to mouth and brought him back, turned his neck back around and sat in the back with him. I asked my mother inlaw to drive. On my way to the ER the ER called me and said they couldn't do the surgery that day. To bring him down the next day. I said I am sorry I am on my way now and he is staying with you guys. I have gone to long with out any sleep and I didn't want to take the chance of something else happening to him while I waited for the next day to arrive. Well he had the surgery the next day. I couldn't bring him home until Friday. He was on pain meds of course. He needed meds every 3 to 4 hours. He needed to have physical therapy every 4 to 6 hours. I did it every 2 to 3 hours. I had to move him as one unit. Of course he can't get up and go to the bathroom or anything. So I started out putting a wee wee pad under him. Well when you do that he wets all over himself and if you don't catch it in time he lays in it. SO I was always washing him. I used alcohol free baby wipes on him. Not till two to three days later did he start with a rash on his bottom. So I stopped using them and just wetting a wash cloth and washing him that way and giving him a bath every night so his muscles would fell better and he would be pee free. Well now i have a new problem and that is I went to comb him out and came off with hunks of skin so I shaved him down from his ribs down and his skin is so dry. The vet said to use bagbalm. I did and he blisterd. So that is out of the question. I talked a pharmacist she said to use a little A and D oinment but don't use to much because it has a lot of Vitamin E in it and I could over dose him on it. So my question to you all is (I know there are some groomers out there) what is the best thing to use on Babybear? I don't trust my old vet(am in the process of finding a new one) How often can I wash him? I have him in baby diapers now so the pee will go into the diaper instead of all over him. He hates to be dirty. He is not walking yet. He is moving his legs a lot now. I do the PT on him alot. I am hoping to make sure he doesn't lose any more muscle. He has lost 6 pounds durning all of this. His eating isn't all it used to be. He is now eating two cans of food a day(Small) with 4 table spoons of pumkin to keep him regular. ER recommended that. I have gone from force feeding him to feeding him on a baby spoon. I can sometimes get him to eat it out of the bowl but he doesn't eat a lot before he gets tired. So I find it better right now for me to feed him by spoon. I hope I can find some help with his skin problem. PLEASE HELP ME. Thank you very much in advance. MYBABE4ME. |

| Do you have to wash him everynight? I know you said he gets pee on him, but maybe just use the wash cloth on him daily to get as much pee off as possible. Wash him maybe every few days, I know he may stink but I don't think it's good to keep washing him everynight. How about vaseline I know I use to use that on my human babies butt's and it worked like a charm, it's the best. I also wanted to say I commend you on everything you are doing for your little furby.

Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | First off i wanna welcome you here to YT and tell you that you have come to a wonderful place to find help. I am so sorry about your baby i hope for a speedy recovery. When my son had diaper rash really bad due to antibiotic and being I'll i put this stuff on him called aquafour( i can't remember how to spell it) you can get it in the baby isle with the other diaper rash stuff also what about Vaseline or neosporin my doc recommended that for my sons blisters on his raw bottom and keep the area where the skin is raw exposed to air to keep it dry. I'm not sure if you can use this stuff but maybe ask a vet and I'm sure they might have a cream to help to. Also clean him as soon as you see waist (I'm sure your already doing this) i hope i helped a little and if not I'm sure someone Else here will be of more assistance . Good luck sweetie AND KEEP US POSTED! oh I FORGOT bout yogert it helps keep good germ fighting bacteria around mabe try that too.

| When my daughter was teething, she would get diaper rash and blisters so bad they would bleed. The only thing that worked was to keep her diaper off and just lay her on something she could pee or mess on. The air helped dry the blisters so they could heal. My heart goes out to you for all you have been thru. Little BabyBear has the best Mommy and Daddy he could. I'll be praying for Baby's improvement and for someone to be able to help you make him more comfortable. Oh, and welcome to YT.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | OMG that poor baby..You all have been thru so much I would think a rash could be fixed up - Have you thought of Baby Powder ???? I would ASK the vet before using anything - but Vasaline and Baby Powder seem gentle enough to use I would think. ALL THE BEST TO YOU ~~ I sincerely hope he gets better and lives a long healthy PAIN FREE Life...you sound like you've done all you can. Sending hugs to BabyBear and wishing him a full recovery bless his heart. |

| Wow, what a story. 1st welcome to YT. This is such a great site, everyone here is really nice and always willing to lend an ear or paw. I do not have a 100% for sure answer, but sounds like his skin is so sensitive after everything. I know that washing removes the natural oils from the skin and coat.....is it possible that his fur is staying just a little damp for to long and that is causing some of the more recent problems. Vaseline would be a good barrier, messy, but a barrier. Please keep us posted on his recovery.
