Hi . I just picked Layla up from the vet's office because she got spayed today and she is shaking.. not violently.. but like she is cold.. is this normal? Also she came home with a cotton ball over her incision... is this supposed to stay on?? any help is greatly appreciate.. thanks so much

It's a reaction from the anesthetic. Just keep her warm but under close eye.

I'd keep the cotton ball on for a couple of hours...but watch it so that it isn't getting soaked with blood (a sign for a vet visit).

After a couple of hours and she is recovered from anesthetic, remove the cotton ball and she should keep this area clean.

Did the vet not give you written instructions on how to care for her?

Hi .He didn't write anything down but we discussed her incision.. but i dind't look at it there.. so i never noticed the cotton ball. We talked about getting her to eat and drink and to keep her activity levels down..

so the shaking is a reaction.. and you said to keep a close eye... for what? what would be danger signs??

there is no blood on the cotton ball.. i think i will leave it there till tomorrow... should i stay up with her tonight or will she be ok??? i'm a new worried mom!!

WOAH!!! I'm really surprised that the Vet didn't keep your little lady over night. I believe for the most part that an over night stay is the norm for females...At least that is what happened to my little lady last Friday. As for why she's shaking, (BY NO MEANS AN EXPERT HERE) my thought is her reacting to anesthetic. For the most part, she should still be groggy for the next few hours. GOOD LUCK and keep us posted!

hmm...I have a boy yorkie so I'm not sure with the spaying but I had 2 beagles spayed and I don't remember a cotton ball or them shaking and they were both small with we got the surgery. I also had them back the same night.

I think you should give her some nutrical. Remember that she has not eaten for a while and lots of warm rest.

Jewels shoke like that after her spay. She was better the next day though

Thanks for the great info!. i went to petsmart to get nutrical and they dont' have it.. however she has eaten quite a bit of soft food and even a bit of hard. She tried to stand up earlier which was her way of telling me she had to poop so i am worried about sleeping tonight and having her pee or poop on herself. any suggestions?? thanks for all of the support.. this site is amazing

You could give her a little bit of honey if you cant find nutrical. I didnt give Jewels any nutrical though and like I said she was fine the next day

Nutristat is the same as Nutrical and I buy it at Petsmart. How is Layla today? Most complain of constipation after spay and we suggest to give canned pumpkin (fiber) without all the spices (also good for diarrhea).

Are you saying she can't stand up? That doesn't sound normal at all after a spay --- keep us posted.

Well thankfully Layla has not been constipated. Yesterday she had problems standing because she wasn't strong enough but today she is able to pee and poop on her own

I took someone's advice and bought Onesies that she wears to stop her from biting at her stiches... and she looks so friggin cute in them :P

we live in London .. well outside of London Ontario. I thought i would need something like Nutical but she is eating no problem. She is also teething right now so yesterday she just ate moist food because she didn't have the energy to chew but today she is back to her normal hard food.

I'm so glad she's feeling better and I remember having surgery once and when I came out of it - I was jittery like I was freezing....I wonder if it could have been a reaction ?

Glad to hear she's moving around....bless her heart
