| Physical Therapy?? Hello all, My little Lyric jumped off the couch backwards about 5 weeks ago and fractured the bone just under his knee cap . Well he was is a soft cast for 5 weeks but my vet took his cast off this past Monday because she is concerned that his muscles were deteriorating. He seems to be doing okay, but he still won't fully walk on his leg. I talked with the vet and she said that it's going to be awhile before he uses it fully. My poor baby, his little leg is so scrawny and skinny looking. When I rub my hand and up and down his leg, all I feel are bones. My mom thought maybe swimming might be a good physical therapy for him to build the muscle back up. Has anybody else gone through a broken limb? Any suggestions? I'm so scared that it's so skinny that he might end up hurting it again. He's a little crazy boy and trying to keep him and my Maltese calm is close to impossible. Thanks so much!

| Swimming is an excellent source of exercise! My maltese is recovering from LP surgery and I put on his life jacket which has a handle on the top and just hold him while he paddles away...... He also has a walking schedule which we've been doing for the past 6 weeks and will continue for the next 2 1/2 weeks. Restricted stair climbing is included with the use of support for the back legs. I see you're in Colorado......was this your regular Vet or an Orthopaedic Surgeon who fixed his leg? Here in NJ most Orthopaedic's have a Physical Therapist in their office who sets up the Rehab Schedule for your pet. It really is important to rebuild the muscle/ligaments around the broken bone to provide added support during the healing process. The healing process continues long after the cast is removed. Call around and see if you can find a Physical Therapist - to be honest, I could not afford to take Chan in 3X a week and they had NO problem giving me detailed instructions on his rehab. I have even called with a few questions and they've answered them and given a few more suggestions. Good Luck to you.... |

| Thank you so much for the advice. I plan on getting him a life vest this weekend. He's even small enough to use the tub as his "pool". He's doing much better, but still not 100%. He saw an orthopedic surgeon, but only to rule out the need for surgery. His regular vet is the one who has seen him through the fracture. I think we will also start a walking regiment. A friend of mine has a yorkie and a german shepard and they go on a hike every weekend. Her yorkie's little legs are just so muscular and strong. I think it's a really good idea for us especially since these little babies have a higher chance of having the knee problems. Thanks again, your input was very helpful!

| My Yorkie had LP surgery in July and still does not use her leg all the time. The only therapy we were instructed was to manually rotate the leg every day. I thought about putting her in the pool to swim as theray. Wish I had sooner, it might have helped. Too cool right now but I'm sure we will have more warm days. I'm afraid her leg is not getting better like it should. How is your furbaby doing after the LP surgery? |
