| Perthes vs Hip Dysplasia? HI, I have a 6 mo old yorkie that I've had for about 3 weeks now. She is 2.5 lbs. She has recently started lifting her left hind leg and refusing to bear weight on it. I know the possible causes of this are: hip dysplasia, perthes, or luxating patella. I will be taking her to the vet, but can't get there til Saturday. I was wondering what the symptoms of these 3 ailments are? Is one more likely than the other? Also, what is the prognosis and extent of treatment? Anything I can do to relieve the symptoms right now? Thanks KRissy and Ladybug |

| I'm sorry to hear that. Do you think that she may have just hurt it sometime? I don't have any experience with any of those things, but I'll bet someone will come along who knows and can advise you. Good luck and let us know how the trip to the vet comes out. Have you done a search of this site (the search button is on the blue bar at the top) to see if you could learn anything that way?

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Maybe she just hurt it and it will get better. I would try and keep her from jumping as much as possible until you can get the vet to look at her. Good luck.

| Legg Perthes My baby stopped playing and running. We just thought she was lazy since she was a little heavier than our other Yorkie. Then she started kind of hopping as she ran once in awhile; then completely pulled her left hind leg up and would not put any weight on it. She had Legg Perthes and had surgery in July. My vet said the surgery should completely take care of it and that small dogs do better since there is not a lot of weight put on the leg during the healing process. She still does not use her leg all the time but I have read it can take up to a year for it to completely heal. If we had gotten her to the vet sooner, she might have healed faster. Her leg had completely popped out of the socket. She never gave any indication of being in pain until she would not use the leg. Good luck with your baby. I had never heard of this until Meisa was diagnosed and researched the internet to find out what I could. |

| My Tia had the same symptoms and the doctors said it was either perthes or dysplasia and the good news is she had FHO femoral head ostectomy and runs as fast as my other 2 today! It did take some time to heal and at times I questioned if she would limp forever. Its usually not the luxating patella when they won't put any weight on it at all. And the only way to diagnose is with an xray for perthes or dysplasia. |

| Do you remember how long it took to completely heal? I'm hoping she will eventually start using the leg more. When I take her outside she does use it more. It's like she forgets she can't use it and just runs but in the house she hops most of the time. Just wish I had taken her sooner to get it corrected. |

| I don't remember exactly but it was a few months because I was giving up & complaining that I guess she was one of the few that would limp forever but I also remember my vet saying that they get used to limping and that was true as she would limp in the house but when we took her out in our backyard she would start to run & forget herself. We noticed a big improvement after we started walking her every night. At first she would walk and then start limping so we would carry her but now after a few months she never has to be carried. Tia was about a year old when she had surgery so if I had to guess its been around 5-6 months to heal completely. As a matter of fact we think the vet forgot one of the stitches in her hip. Did they cut your baby on the outside of the leg? Thats how Tia was done. |

| Yes, they cut the outside of her left hip. She was also almost a year old. I've been thinking maybe I should start walking her every night and will start today. It has been over 100 degrees here so too hot for me to walk but it has cooled off now. Since she seems to forget about it outside. We are still doing the therapy every day. My vet also said she would have to realize that she can use it; that she is just used to pulling it up. He did another set of xrays the last visit and said it was healing very well. It has only been 2 months since the surgery so guess I am rushing things and worrying too soon. She goes back to the vet on the 15th. Thanks for the info, makes me feel much better. |
