Unhappy Need help for incontinent 15 year old

My little yorkie, Toby, is now 15 years old. He is having problems with incontinence during the day and is becoming restless and pacing/urinating at night. I have had a COMPLETE physical, including tests of his urinary health and he is OK.

This is my question. He is 10 pounds and has short hair. Does anyone know of any good diapers that I can purchase that can help him? This dog is my whole life and I just want him to be happy. If he pees in the house too much it will become stinky and I just want to help him.

I would appreciate any help.

Thank you so very much,

Renee

Hi Renee,

First, welcome to YT.

I know how much you love little Toby. It shows. Are you familiar with belly bands? Never having had a little boy, I'm not going to be very much help. There are other people on here that will be able to help you more in this area with your boy than me.

However, I will say that I have read that there is medication available to help the problem. It seems that I have read about on this site. I don't know if it could help your little boy or not, but you might ask your vet about it or research this site by using the search button on the blue bar.

Belly bands might really help you deal with the incontinence, but keep in find dogs with urinary incontinence are more susceptible to bacteria infections so you may want to discuss using belly bands with your vet in case they might promote bacteria.

Have you talked to your vet about giving a drug to stimulate the sphincter muscle of the bladder called Phenylpropanolamine or PPA for short.

This drug has recently undergone a class reschedule change to a controlled substance, which has made the cost of medication increase. It is still quite affordable however, and recommended.

In male neutered dogs, testosterone replacement can be done, but this is an expensive ordeal, and not readily available. Most cases will respond to PPA, so this is then the recommended treatment protocol for the incontinent male dog.

Thank you, too. Muffin was my heart. It will never really be the same without her, either.

I didn't know if you were familiar with belly bands or not. I know people on here sell them, too, but finding them quickly isn't easy. So I did a quick search on the net and here is a picture of them:

You can go to this site to read about them:

http://www.petedge.com/shopping/sear...=34&Search.y=9

I've read that they should be changed often because the urine burns their skin, too.

Hope you can find a solution for your problem. The year before I lost Muffin she had a UTI and became incontinent shortly, but luckily that cleared up shortly after her medication was finished. I was so glad and so was she, because she looked so pitiful in a diaper!

Animal Smiley 019 cleaning advice

Renee,

Sorry to hear your little one is having health problems, what ever it is it always scares us and makes us feel helpless.

I read in another yorkie group of one of the girls using baby papers? I have never tried them so I don't know how well they fit, but it is something you can try while you wait for the balley band's.

As far as cleaning vinegar with water (50/50)works good to take the smell off of carpet and cement.

Keep us updated.

Good Luck

Others have suggested belly bands. They would not be difficult to make, and you can use a feminine hygene pad inside them so you don't have to change the band itself so often.

You could use small hand towels or even cloth baby diapers and just fold and pin them, if money is an issue.

I have successfully always used a bellyband with my little boy. I put one on him at night -and he almost never wets. And, during the day I take him out every couple hours, so he doesn't need to wear one then.

BUT - in the evening when I busy (working on my computer) - I put a bellyband on him and let him run. He still never wets often - but when he does - there is no damage.

I think the secret with bellybands is to check them often and change them immediately even if they are only slightly damp.

We have never had any problems.

Hi! My dog is 13 1/2 years old. His name is also Toby. He is also having the same problems. I tried belly bands but they would mot stay on him.
Have you found anything that worked? I am trying to train him to go in a litter box. Not having much luck.

These pants work great as they stay on throughout the day. They are more expensive than regular belly bands but they stay on.

Hope this helps.

I have seen quite a few different sellers on ebay selling doggie diapers and belly bands, may be worth checking out. Good luck with Toby!
