| My little guy is sick! Hi All, My new little puppy "Baxter" became seriously ill over the weekend. We have had him for 7 days, he is 7 weeks old. I now know he was too young to leave his mamma but he was brought to us and we didn't know any better. Anyway, he started having diarrhea about 3 days ago, refused to eat or drink. On Sunday, I sat him in front of his water dish and he just fell over. I thought he was going to die. I found an emergency vet and took him right over. They gave him dextrose in his veins and some antibiotic. I got to bring him home that afternoon, since he seemed to be doing better. The vet was not able to get enought of a stool sample to test because of the runniness of the bowel. He was eating again and drinking so we thought it was just hypoglycemia. I got up during the night a couple of times to feed him and he ate and drank OK. Then this morning he would not eat or drink. I was to take him back to get his IV taken out, He had a bowel movement right when we got to the vet so they tested it and he has coccidia. They have given him Albon and also an anti diahrrhea medicine. He ate well this afternoon, but I had to force some pedialyte in him with an eyedropper. My question is if anyone has dealt with this, about how long till I see some improvement in his appetite. I am giving him anything he will eat right now, (boiled chicken, baby food turkey, cheese) just to keep his blood sugar up. I will worry about real dog food when he has recovered. I feel so sorry for the little guy and I am bound and determined to save him. Please give me any advice you can. Pat |

| I am so sorry. I don't have any experience with this illness, but I know how hard it is when your baby is sick. I will be praying for little Baxter and hoping he gets well soon!!

good advise here !! My Chanel came to me with coccidia and I saw an improvement within 24 hours once she was treated - what a relief that was - I did use a syringe and Pedialite to make sure she stayed hydrated .....Take Pats (YorkieRose's) advise and your baby should be just fine ....GOOD LUCK ! | |

| I am so glad I found this website! It is like having understanding friends in the same room with you! Baxter seems to really like the boiled chicken, but I have to hand feed him. I used an eye dropper to give him some white Karo syrup along with his chicken. He is really mad at me for doing this but it is for his own good! I am planning on setting the alarm for every 2 or 3 hrs tonight to feed and hydrate him tonight. I will be crabby tomorrow! I will keep you all posted. Pat |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Oh good !! When my Chanel had coccidia she never collapsed but did get lethargic.....She was a tiny tiny thing like Bazter and I freaked - I was lucky to get her to the ER before she got really bad so I totally understand how fast they can go down you did really great getting him to the vet as soon as you did - you saved his life you know...Coccidia causes such severe dehydration that they can go into shock and convulsions.... ALL THE BEST TO Baxter !! Sounds like he'll do great under your care and it's worth it to keep a very close eye on him at that age...Good luck and keep us posted ok ? |

| Piper has coccidia. My vet never told me about pedialite. Is that the kind for children? Is there a flavor to stay away from? Piper is not drinking much, but her appetite is good. She has been sick for 3 weeks. First she tested positive for giardia. Now this, along with bronchitis. |

| Sorry to hear you have a sick baby too. I am pretty new to this, so don't really know how to answer about the Pedialyte. I just bought the plain flavor. Baxter goes Monday for his first well check and shots. Hope he gets a good report. I know what you are going through. It is very frustrating. Be glad that your little one is eating. That will help a lot. Pat |

| I got my pup at 8 weeks and took him to the vet the day we got him to get him checked out. The vet took a stool swab and told me he had cocidia and put him albon as well. He never had hypoglocema, runny stools . iko is fine now. good luck |

| I'm glad to report that Baxter has made a full recovery! He is now a normal, mischevious little puppy. He had gained 3 ounces when I took him back to the vet. His stools are normal now. It gave us quite a scare! I thought when we got him, that he was way too calm. The vet said it was one of the highest concentration of Coccidia he had ever seen. We are lucky he is OK. Now I just have to find a food that he will consistently eat! One time he eats like a piggy, then the next snubs his nose! Thanks to everyone for their concern. pat |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I am so glad to hear Baxter is all better now! I am sure you will find a food he likes. Ruby is funny that way too. One day she wakes up starving and ready to eat, the next she may not eat much of anything until later in the day or evening. I keep several different good foods on hand and usually I can find one that day she will eat. I think she likes a variety.
