| TeeJay is back from the vet and... he's been diagnosed with luxating patella in both knees . The surgery is going to cost $1200.... per knee! I need your advice YT! His vet said that surgery isnt imminent if he's not in pain. His vet felt around his knee cap and he didnt try to move or struggle so she said he's definitely NOT in pain. He's been prescribed some supplements that will reduce his risk of getting arthritis and he has an appointment with an orthopedist to get some X-rays. His knee only "pop" intermittently, mostly during a quick pace. He's also very athletic and can jump VERY high. He's a year and a month old and he's at 4 lbs exactly right now. What you YOU do if you were in my position? Would you go ahead with the surgery or just let him be? I'm really paranoid about putting my baby under anesthesia. You should've seen me when he had to get neutered; I nearly had an panic attack! Money isnt an issue, I just dont want my little baby to go through unnecessary pain if he doesnt really need the surgery. Thanks in advance guys! |

| I'd wait until the x-rays are done and you have talked with the orthopedist. You'll know more then and have more info to base your decision on. So sorry.

| I've had Japanese Chins with this problem. I was always afraid of anesthesia because all had heart murmurs. So I took a wait and see additude. They never required surgery. I always get a second opinion but realize the vets in my area are more dedicated to making money then anything else, so I usually make my decisions by my dogs behavoir. If I'm in doubt , I visit a vet in another state. Jessica |

| I'm so sorry you & your little one have to go through this! I'm of the wait-and-see crowd, as well. The ortho will be able to show you the xrays, which will help you truly see what's going on in there, rather than guessing & hoping for the best. Either way, you'll both be in my thoughts!

| I am facing the same issue with Roxy. The Vet says her LR in both rear legs is a Grade 2 maybe 3. She shows NO SIGNS of pain. Roxy has very short legs and she is fearful, so she doesn't jump, or go up and down stairs. I have a ramp for the couch or if I make a 'pillow' ramp she will use that too! However, everythime you pick her up you can feel 'it' slip on both sides and she constantly does the 'skipping thing' when she is walking (to make 'it' go back into place on her own). BUT, NO SIGNS OF PAIN - EVER! I have an appt. tomorrow with the specialist. I will not run into surgery either for her, b/c she appears to be in No Pain. BUT, if he feels she is or will be hurting soon, well then we will go from there. Money won't be a issue either, b/c she is our baby and we will find the money somehow if it is needed. Best of Luck and i will let you know what happens tomorrow! |

| vet told me Harley needed surgery on his hindleg, he was holding it up and doc. said kneecap was slipping out, also 1200 dollars, money was a issue with me, so I waited and bought missing link with glyglocomine in it and started to give it to him , for the last 2 months, he doesnt lip or cry , he runs like a banchee now all over, I was scared because he was holding it up and not walking on it, but, like I said I held out and now no symptoms of anything, maybe later I dont know, but thank god for now. I agree with the wait and see what the ortho. does. good luck with your baby. |

| OK, I just back from the Specialist for Roxy. She does have Luxating Patella in both rear legs. Grade III in one and Grade II to Grade III on the other. The specialist recommends surgery. He does one leg at a time so that each can heal properly. And he is definatley high on drigs b/c he wants approx. $3000.00 per leg. Can you beleive it? I almost S@$& in my pants when they gave me the estimate. I definately think Roxy should have surgery at some point, but I am going to have to do some research and possibly find a Specialist OUTSIDE of New York who is skilled but also not going to charge me an arm and a leg! Any suggestions and/or recommendations are great appreciated! |

| Oh my goodness- I wish you the best to find a perfect solution for your baby. $3000 per knee that is really a lot. I hope your baby really doesn't need surgery, maybe a little time something will change. Good luck |

| Wait and see See what the specialist says... then make a decision... but don't feel "forced" into doing something that you really don't want to do. Sometimes doctors can make you feel inferior. It there isn't any pain and your dog isn't limping, I'd wait. Best of luck with whatever you decide.
