Question Fishy Smell Coming from Baby

Yesterday my father was holding Baby, and he had this fishy smell on his arm. It was gross. Well, I smelled Baby, and it was her coochie coo.

This has happened one other time before she was fixed. I thought it had something to do with her "becoming a woman" or something. Well, she's fixed now (and has never come into heat before) and we smelled it again.

Does anyone know what this is? Is it a scent to attract males? I have no idea what it is, but it smells yucky.

If you have any ideas, please let me know.

PS. I don't think she has an infection, b/c she didn't last time. It was just that one day that it smelled. She doesn't smell today. Thanks.

Mostly likely it is coming from her anal glands. People often describe this as a fishy smell.

One time I took my Pom to a small dog show just to look and all of a sudden she had this awful smell almost like urine but not quite almost like you describe. It was awful and lasted awhile. I think she was so excited around all those dogs.

Thanks. Maybe it was coming from her anal glands. It was pretty yucky. I wonder what made her "spray."

No, it wasn't urine. I know that smell cuz she pees on my carpet! It was fishy. Maybe it was her anal glands, like Lacy's Mom said.

The anal sacs can be emptied by contraction of the anal sphincter. This involuntary contraction can be due to the dog being upset, frightened or under pressure, or the contractions can be triggered by the dog to leave its mark upon territory.

Poor baby.... We have had a few bouts with the anal glands getting clogged, and it isn't fun for the little one!

Do you think they could be clogged? She's not scooting her hiney on the ground. The two times that we've smelled this there was family over and she was running around like crazy. Yesterday she was outside all day with us for Memorial day playing in the yard. Maybe she wanted to leave her scent at my parents' house? LOL

If she's not licking, scooting or having problems defecating I really doubt there's a problem. I think you're right she just wanted to leave her scent there - that is their original purpose even though we've domesticated it out of them for the most part.

Thanks. It was yucky, and I hope she doesn't do it again.

Rocco has this smell quite often and I also was told by members of another forum that it was his anal glands.I think I will have the groomer see if they need to be expelled. OR WHATEVER IT'S CALLED.

My groomer doesn't do it here in Jersey. She said it wasn't allowed by the state and only vets can do it. Not sure if it's true or not.

I know petsmart does it. I took Shadow there a few times when I didn't know any better.
