Our Yorkie gave birth to 5 babes Sunday morning/afternoon. 2 were still born. She had problems getting the afterbirth out also. She was given 3 shots on Sunday - 1 for shock, 1 to help her expel the rest of the after birth and 1 of antibiotics. We'll I took her back to the vet today to have her and the pups checked out b/c she was still leaving green "stuff" spots where ever she was laying. The vet gave her another shot of antibiotic and another shot to help her clean out. I believe she was so freaked out by the pups and nervous that she didnt concentrate on herself very much, i.e. cleaning herself.
Ok so now, starting about 2 hrs ago she has been frantic and nervous acting. She is picking the pups up and toting them around and trying to get them to under my bed and trust me that isnt a safe place for those tiny things. She and the pups are gated into a 4' x 4' walk in closet that I cleaned completely out so she would have her own area and could feel secure (btw we dont close the door to the closet - its open at all times with a baby gate up). She has picked up and toted one of the pups so much that it keeps having milk come out of its nose and sounds to be choking and she still keeps toting it around. She is wide eyed and nervous to the point that everytime one of them makes a peep she starts to shake and gets even more nervous acting. She keeps picking them up and toting them to the gate and pawing at it to get out.
Im at my wits end and cant think of anything else that I can do for her. She is eating or was until about 2 hrs ago. I cant get her to eat puppy food so she has been eating pedigree can food and she refuses to drink water so Ive been giving her a mixture of 1 part goats milk to 2 parts water and a tablespoon of light karo syrup. Could she be having anxiety issues from the karo? That just dawned on me while typing. Someone please tell me what to do and how to handle this. She starting to scare me and Im worried that she might hurt the pups. Im assuming the one that keeps gurgling on his milk from her toting him is just having "spit-up" type issues ... do pups get that like human babies do?

Hi - this is only my opinion and you know what they say about opinions.... but it seems to me that Mama is trying to tell you that she wants to move her babies- she didn't pick out the place in the closet, you did ok? I know you say that underneath your bed isn't good but until she finds a place that she feels is acceptable she is not going to settle down. You know, by your own words what she is trying to tell you so.... is they anyway you can give her some kind of spot under the bed? She wants privacy for her and the babies. My girlfriend's s**tzhu (?) did the same thing - she wanted under the bed, so I helped my friend by making room under there and once the pups were bigger and the mama was comfortable with being a mama, she brought the puppies out. Remember, just because you give birth doesn't mean you know exactly what you are doing right? I'll bet your little mama would settle down if you let her take care of the babies the way she sees fit. As far as the puppy that is gurgling, I can't even begin to help you with that and I'm hoping and feel very confident you'll get help on that issue from someone here real shortly. Now the little one that she carried around so much hasnt stopped crying. Its been making a cry noise every second for the last hour. Its like it takes a breath and lets it out in a cry.

Oh you poor thing having to watch this unfold!! Call your vet. My vet is available all the time if I ever have any questions. The secretary will take the info and then check with a vet tech. Usually the vet tech can handle all my questions but if they don't feel qualified it's always bumped up to the vet. Good Luck. We are all thinking about you and hoping it all turns out ok which i have a good feeling it all will. Hugs!

I'm not sure about the little one either. I was thinking fluid in the lungs because of the gurgling sound. Have you tried clearing the lungs? Maybe Mom knows something isn't right and that is why she is bringing the puppy to you. If Mom wants under the bed I would clear out the area and she will probably let you move her back to the closet after a couple of weeks. Let us know.

Sorry guys, my internet has been down for most of the day

Momma and baby did settle down last night a couple of hours of me sitting in the closet with them seemed to do the trick

The fluid that came out of the pups nose was milk, I could see it quite clearly and it was sneezing. The bodys way of clearing the nose, I think.

I moved them all into a extra large dog crate and put it at the end of the couch (very close to the same spot her bed usually is) and she seemed very content with that. I have always made her beds myself by making large flat pillows so I made her an extra couple of those this morning so she wouldnt be without for even a minute (with all the washing Im having to do with the two she has now - sometimes she had to do with out "her" pillow and make due with a substitute

)

Sorry for the book but thanks so much for all the concern. I was really worried last night but they all seem to be better now.

Milk coming out of the nose isn't a good sign. Check the roof of the puppy's mouth for a cleft palate just to be sure.

Hey thanks for the suggestion. Ive checked them all and none have a cleft palate.

It could have quite possibly been milk around the nose, etc. Im just not sure

BUT Momma and babes are doing much much better!

I gave up on trying to fight her about where she beds down (to an extent) she has as of this point found a comfy end of our couch (covered with layers of blankets and one of her pillows) as her perch of happiness - for the moment atleast

- dont worry guys, she and pups are safe, its a reclining couch and I have the foot out to avoid any dropping and Ive been in the room with them all day. Ill post a pic when my camera batteries recharge. Ive worn them out in the past few days!

Agitation can be a warning sign of eclampsia. Are you giving calcium supplements (1/2 tums am and pm works)? Worth a call to the vet. Also, too much cleaning may be bothering her, they don't appreciate the smell of freshly laundered anything...I only change out half of the bedding at a time.
Don't know what your temp is like there, but it essential that pups are warm. I keep a heating pad under half the whelping box.

It is just not feasable to keep a mother dog and her pups on a reclining couch, she needs quiet, PRIVACY..a "den" like area..and CONFINEMENT or you are going to find puppies sprawled out on your living room floor cold and mommyless if not dead. You need to quit giving into her, and put her in a LARGE crate or other confined area (much smaller than a walk in closet) with a heating pad under half of it...make sure the heating pad is WARM to your hand through the bedding, but not hot. You can't allow her to carry the puppies around, she is going to hurt them even not meaning to. You've got to be the smarter of the two species in this case, and make her do what she needs to do, even though you want to baby her...she is a mommy now herself, and she needs to be made to BE a mommy. I'm sorry if I sound harsh, I am just cringing at the thought of her carrying around puppies in her mouth with milk coming out their noses crying, no heating pad in your pictures, and the fact she's laying on a couch, not in a cozy puppy den where she can learn to be a mother, and has no choice in the matter. TOUGH LOVE on this one.
