| brown recluse Long story short, our beagle probably ate a brown recluse. He chewed up a container, which a dead spider was in. I repeat, the spider was dead, but should we be worried....or VERY worried??!!? |

| Their toxin is what is called necrotoxin which is flesh eating. I would think that even dead he might have the poison in him. How recent was his demise? My dad got bit by one and almost lost his arm. If it just happened I would consider giving him some hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting after researching for the proper dose or calling a vet or the poison control number ($35 charge). Or, you could be sneaky and call the human poison control and say your baby ate it, you'll probably get an answer before they find out your baby is a dog! Just kidding, I think. |

| I would get him to the vet for some serious antibiotics, fast. If the venom is dealt with early enough there is less damage. Myself... I wouldn't chance it. Hope he's okay. Good luck, and let us know how he's doing. |

| well, it is another family members dog, and she chose NOT to take him to the vet due to advice that was given to her. The dog is acting just fine, no problems at all...I sure hope he stays that way... |

| Yeah I would at least call the vet. We were just talking about them with humans and my sister has a friend who was bit and didn't realize it for days. She got very very ill before they figured out what was going on days later. I do suspect, however, that the stomach acid gobbled up that spider and all the nasty stuff. |

| JOsie - Am I wrong in thinking that more than an entire day has gone by - and the dog has had no problems - plus you aren't positive that it was a brown recluse - plus the spider was dead? I'm not sure I'd be too worried. Carol Jean |

I'm not sure that eating one of these spiders would have the same effect as having it "inject" venom into the dog. And - even though some people have had severe reactions --most of the time reactions from brown recluse bites aren't serious. I'm not sure I'd be too worried...... Carol Jean |

| hmm. This is very interesting. I have been bit by these spiders on several occasions. But don't have a clue about eating one. Honestly, the brown recluse spider is SO hard to kill. And people mistake other spiders for it all the time. Any news on how this little one is doing now?

| update: Well, he is doing just fine! We are very thankful. We had been in touch with the vet and he said that in order for the spider to hurt the dog, the fangs would have had to penetrate his tissue at some point. Since it was dead for a few hours or so, the vet said this is highly unlikely. He also said that if there was something wrong, it would be very evident. I was worried that the dog may have internal problems from it at the very least, but I was relieved when the doctor said, "oh no, you will be able to tell". Well, I was relieved in a very scared way.... thanks to everyone who posted! (oh, and although we were not 100%, we were pretty sure that this spider WAS a brown recluse...while it was still in the plastic bowl(dead), we searched it online, and it was a match. Also, my neighbor is a zoologist, and he agreed. scary stuff...) |
