| Yorkie with Blad Spots, Itching We recently bought a Yorkie, and we noticed he was itching a lot, and when we combed him, chunks of hair would come out. He is currently on medication for ringworm, but it doesn't seem to have an effect. He has also been treated for mange mites. He has medicated shampoo also, but again, it hasn't been getting better. Anyone know what could cause this? Here is a picutre: http://grindsoft.com/toby%20044.jpg |

I Love Thor Donating Member | Wow that pic was huge!!!!! Anyways its sounds like your yorkie has been through a lot recently and after the ringworm and everything clears up she should be on the road to growing some hair back. Some sort of oatmeal shampoo is good, and also omega-3 fish oil can help. What food is she eating? Make sure you're not giving her a bath too often and make sure you rinse her really well. But it sounds right now that she has a lot going on and when everything gets cleared up she will hopefully grow that hair back. |

| Here's a good link to skin problems, scroll down and look at the chart and then research those you feel it could be. http://lowchensaustralia.com/health/skin.htm |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | it looks like demadex mange. has your vet tested for that? i saw this a lot in puppies. the vet i worked for treated it with ivermectin/dextrose oral injections once a week. talk to you vet about this possibility. if not treated properly it can get way out of hand and you might need to shave your baby down |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Spot Could it be fungal? Lex has a small dry spot on his ear that looks a bit like that. A few people recommended using Tea Tree Oil (which comes in shampoos and also in just straight oil). I am going to get him some and try that on his ear. He hasn't lost hair like that so I am not sure what to tell you there. From what I have read online the tea tree oil is used to treat all sorts of skin disorders including ring worm. Good luck!

| Don't go crazy with the tea tree oil, one drop is enough. You might want to do some research - some have said it is toxic, but I believe only when overused (never use on cats). Here's a link that says no to using tea tree oil http://www.purebredpuppy.com/forum/v...=10218&forum=2 |

| I actually use grapefruit seed extract (GSE) in my aviary all the time. I use it to disinfect baby feeding syringes, add to water to combat bacteria, add it to the baby's bath water, add it to handfeeding formulas to reduce bacteria problems in the crop. I also add a few drops to the dog's water if they have diarrhea that lasts more than 24 hours. It is very similar in properties (antibacterial, antifungal) to tea tree oil, but can be ingested safely. It is very concentrated and must be diluted prior to using. I think it might be safer (when diluted) than the tea tree oil, especially since you have an open sore. If you think it might be mange I would also give him something to boost his immune system like Vitamin C and echinacea. Also make sure he is protected against fleas because it could be a reaction to flea bites. Last edited by Lacy's Mom; 05-15-2006 at 12:31 PM. |

| Demodex or Mange I adopted Charlie (10 yo) in April and he has had demodex (mange) for years and was never completely treated. Ivermectin liquid is what finally turned him around. He was on it for almost five months. However, I had a thyroid panel done on him, and his T-4 level which should have been between 2-4 was at 0. So between the Demodex and T-4, he couldn't recover his coat. Today, he is on thyroid 2xday, off the invermectin and doing wonderful. He did have skin scraping and will have to follow up with scrapings for the rest of his life. Any big stress could reactive the mite. The T-4 was also tested at 4 weeks, and he had risen to 2.8 . I would address both of these conditions with your vet. Good luck.

| itching I recently used Advantage because I was staying with family. My dogs are not used to flea control since I don't have fleas. Her hair fell out in clumps in a matter of days all around the application site. I gave her three baths before the itching stopped. Ever since, she has been itching more than she ever has and causing hot spots. I think they are just sensitive to a lot of drugs. I now use only baby bath and conditioner on her skin. |

| Here I am again questioning the breeder. did you go to the premises and see the parents and litter mates? was your dog the only one with this problem? was your dog cheaper then the others being sold? It is so important to only purchase from good breeders who truely care about their dogs, you can avoid alot of heartache. Please make your breeder aware of this issue you are having. Did you get a health guarantee? |
