Help Please! My Yorkie is Sick We got a tick off of my Yorkie, Allie, 2 days ago and took her to the vet because she wasn't playing and she was laying around. They put her on some medicine. The next day, yesterday, she was shaking all day and playing even less so I called the vet again and he changed her medicine and looked in her ears because when you touch her ears she screams. But the vet did not see any more ticks in her ears and they were not infected. We have gotten up today and she is jerking off and on and she can barely raise her head and she will barely move around and she won't eat anything. Is all this caused from the tick or does it sound like parvo or what could it be. Please help!!

It doesn't sound like parvo. Ticks carry a lot of diseases. Had the tick been there a while? Did you remove it properly without squeezing the infection from the tick's body into the dog? Your vet can do a blood test to determine if she has any of the tick diseases (Lyme disease doesn't always show up). Most of the tick diseases cause joint pain and inflammation, along with other symptoms. I assume your vet put her on a tetracycline type drug which is good, but you need to take her back in.

| Yes, please let us know. I want to know how your baby is doing. That was a pretty scary post. I hope you don't think I over-reacted, but from what you wrote, it sounded to me like your baby was going down fast... I sure hope she is BETTER!!!

I would also give her Nutrical or Nutristat since she is not eating and may have low blood sugar, that might explain her lethargy and jerking. Nutrical and nutristat are a lot better, but if you don't have any on hand give her some Karo corn syrup or honey. Low blood sugar is also a side effect (although rare) of tetracycline drugs. Also make sure she doesn't get dehydrated. Offer Pedialyte by syringe (or at least water) every 30 minutes. Last edited by Lacy's Mom; 05-07-2006 at 11:07 AM.

Allie is Better I did take Allie back to the vet and he found 2 more ticks inside her ear that he had missed the day before. It has been a week now and she has taken all of her medicine and is feeling so much better. Thanks for all of your help she was a very sick puppy and had my daughter and myself scared she wasn't going to make it. She is eating good and playing with us again thank goodness.
