Default Rimadyl??? Help!

Frodo broke his leg on Sunday evening and he has been on Rimadyl to help with the pain. But he's been extremely sleepy, droopy, and tired since he started taking it. I've never seen him like this. Has anyone experienced similar problems?? Should I call the vet to see if this is normal? Help!!

My lab was on rimadyl after spayed and it did leave her a bit lethargic, if you think it is more than that, do check with your vet, and double check the dosage...

the dosage is 1 mg per pound of body weight two times a day, but maybe the vet will lower the dose. i don't think the dog should be continually sleepy - i would check with the vet.

Aggie's on Rimadyl right now due to spay. She's been a little tired but not to your description. You may want to ask your vet to lower the dosage.

I think that is very relative from dog to dog, my lab had a higher dosage than that, Mojo didn;t even need pain medication after neuter. The best thing it is to check with the vet he will know your dog and this medication best...if the dog doesn;t even show signs of pain, it might not even be necessary

Rocco had Rimadyl after his teeth cleaning, and it can cause a sleepy, lethargic dog. Rocco was on 25mg, then they were broke into quarters (he is 6lbs). It's used for pain and as an anti-inflamatory. I am sure by now you have spoke your vet, if you haven't, call and see if you can half the dose you are to give.

Best wishes to Frodo<3

Couple things -

First - Your pup shouldn't need to be on anything for pain for a very long time. So, he so be off the Rimidyl before long.

Second - It probably wouldn't hurt your dog to be somewhat tired and lathargic for a while - after breaking his leg. I'm sure your vet would like him to be as calm as possible for a while.

Third - If your pup needs to be on this drug for a longer period of time - and continues to be tired, check with your vet - because many dogs take this drug every day always - with rheumatitis, etc. And, they get back to better-than-normal activity. However, your vet may be giving your pup a little stronger dose right now.

Good luck! Carol Jean
