Has anyone ever heard of this? If so please respond since I can not find really any good info on this.
My one little boy was to the vet today and they think he might have a enlongated palate. He is sending us to a specialist on Monday to find out for sure if this is the problem.
My little guy has had what I describe as a cold or a congested nose for a bit now and nothing the vet has done has seemed to help. There has been about 8 x rays taken and it is not the airway or anything like that. Nothing at all shows up in the xrays. The trech is good and no problems there. It just seems as though he has a head cold so to speak.
Any advise so I can have some clue what I am up against.....Also can anyone tell me what this could be caused from? None of my others have it and not even the parents or grandparents, so if it is something hereditary then it is way back in the line....
All I know here is if this is indeed what is wrong with my little guy then surgery is needed and they say it can run any where from $1200.00 to $2000.00. And that is if nothing else is wrong or needed. I am more than willing to get the money together as that is not it at all. When it comes to money or my baby it will be my baby. Just wanted you to know this so no one thinks this is the issue.

I hate that you are having to go through this!! I know that I would do the same exact thing you are doing if I was in this situation. Your doggie is lucky that he has a mommy who cares as much as you do!! I have never heard of an elongated palate, so all I could tell you to do is to do a search on the internet. Good luck! Let us know how everything turns out!!

I;m so sorry you have to go through that...a few months ago i found out Mojo has a slight elongated soft pallate, in his case it is not required a surgery (Thank God!!)
All i really know about it is that it is more common in "flat" faced dogs like bulldogs and pugs for example and i never found any info about this in yorkies......here are a few links....

Elongated Soft Palate

One of the the most common forms of airway obstruction in Brachycephalic (short muzzled) breeds is due to an elongated soft palate. The soft palate is an extension of the hard palate which forms the roof of the mouth. The purpose of the soft palate is to serve as a mobile flap preventing food and water from entering the nasal passages during swallowing. A soft palate that is elongated will either hang in front of the airway or will fall into the larynx during inhalation.
Dogs affected by chronic airway obstruction (CAO) tend to breathe rather noisily when excited. Mouth breathing, snoring and snorting are characteristics of this condition. These characteristics become even more pronounced when the dog is hot or during periods of exercise. The dogs frequently gag in an attempt to clear their airway and occasionally bring up foam and saliva while eating or drinking. The harder the dog breathes, the greater the swelling and elongation of the soft palate.
Most often an elongated soft palate is difficult to positively confirm other than while the dog is under general anesthesia, surgical correction is usually done at the same time.

I really feel bad for you...I know what you are going through....My little one has a cleft pallatte and we are looking at around $3000.00 to get it fixed. But like you ,we will do anything for our baby. Keep us posted and good luck...

Well I thought I would update you on on my little guy's condition.
He will have to have the surgery to have this problem fixed. We are looking hopefully in a few weeks to get this done. I am going to try and list some yorkie items that I have new on here to sell to try to help get more money for this as it is expensive. If I would have known this was going to happen I wouldn't have bought all the clothes I did on here as that money would have helped out. Any ways I do not expect anyone to feel sorry for us as I do know sometimes things happen and they always happen for a reason.

I am sos orry to hear that your baby has to have the corrrection. I have heard that is can be done with laser which is a lot less intrusive. My neighbor was being treated for sleep apnea and severe snoring secondary to elongated palate. The spec. gradually lasered it back and he is fine. Still a lousy SOB but he sleeps at night..LOL

I just wanted to update those of you who responded to my post. SInce I took my little guy to the specialist and found out what was wrong and what needed to be done. Well I have to tell you all something and hey you might just think I am crazy but here goes......We along with others have prayed for our little guy and since we came home that day with all the news from them....he has acted 95% better. Hardly any coughing, hacking or snoring. Nothing almost.
I just wanted to thank God for this.

I hope you are able to get some answers. Are you comfortable with your doctor if they have to do surgery?
