| Two big scares yesterday~two snorting/breathing attacks, one with vomit! Well, Baby sometimes snorted when she got excited, but nothing major. Then yesterday, when I came home from work she had a snorting attack! It sounded like she couldn't breathe out of her nose. It scared the crap out of me, so I took her to the vet. She got two x-rays, and it's NOT a collapsed trachea. The vet said she was probably just overly excited. Okay, so I was relieved. But then... Last night at 2:30am, Baby woke up with another one of those snorting/breathing attacks. Once again it sounded like she couldn't breath. Well, she went to the end of the bed and vomited on the floor!! I looked at it and it looked meaty. I'm thinking the bully stick This is the only thing in her diet that has changed. Oh, and the vomit smelled aweful!! It smelled like urine and skunk. What the heck happened? What I'm going to do is not give her the bully stick, and see if the attacks stop. I don't know what to do...it's scary to wake up to a Yorkie that doesn't look like she is breathing!!!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | BOTH my girls have done that especially when they get excited....I gently close off the nostrils - I kind of lightly tap my fingers over their little nose holes...so I'm not shutting off breathing totally....but it seems to really help - You want her to take a breath thru her mouth to stop that snorting....it IS awful and I freaked the first time Chanel did it ...thought she was hyperventilating....then I AMOST did in a panic lol - but you can stop it.... Another trick is distract them quickly - I usually RUN out to my backyard and they race behind me - for some reason they will stop this way too. |

IF she doesn't get sick again - chalk it off to the Bully stick and maybe the snorting took her by surprise too.... It really does work to pick her up the minute she does it...and just gently tap on her nostrils while holding her head against you....I hate that snorting because I'm always afraid they'll hurt their tracheas... or worse choke. | |

| Two of my small dogs (my Bichon and my PoodlePom) do this. They usually do it when they get excited - when I come in the door getting home from work, etc. But, occasionally, they just start doing it - and I have no idea what caused it. I know that when my PoodlePom was a pup - it scared her. So, I always picked her up and held her until it was over - and then, of course, she was fine. As time passed, she became less and less upset when these "attacks" happened. To me they behave like they are having a sudden, severe, short asthma attack. (There are definitely some sort of spasms going on and my Bichon certainly does "snort" when this happens.) Several people have told me that this is a "small dog thing" and is common with many small dogs. It certainly has never caused any real problems with either of my dogs - and my one dog did it for her entire life - perhaps once a month or so...sometimes oftener. My advise is just stay calm, stay with your dog, keep him calm, and it will pass. If you get excited and start fussing over him, it makes it more frightening for him. I stay by my dog's side when this happens, don't handle him, but pet him, and tell him he's going to be okay - and in only a minute or two, he is fine--- and none the worse for having had this episode. As far as the vomiting part - my dogs never did this....I would wait and see if this happens again.... He may have had a breathing attack and had an upset stomach at the same time.... and may have been frightened by it all. Carol Jean PS: I know many many people whose dogs have this breathing problem occasionally - and we have all learned over the years that it "just happens" and no longer worry about it. |

| That happens to Maddie now and then and never fails, the day after her heartworm meds, she gets those attacks. I think what you're referring to is reverse sneezing and if you do a search on that, you'll find all kinds of info on it. I, like Villette, cover Maddie's nostrils. They say by doing that, they are forced to take a breath through their mouth which will stop the reverse sneezing. It is soooo scary and I still get scared when Maddie does it! I think they get scared too, when it happens to them!

| Try not to get scared if this happens to your dog.... it is common and comes and goes and the dogs are none the worse for it. But - if you get frightened - your pet will become frightened or more frightened --- and this will cause these episodes to last even longer because they tense up. And, of course, if you can remain calm (and you must), it will be far less frightening for your pet... and they'll do just fine. I mentioned that both my dogs got so that they just did it, got over with it, and went on their way. I am sure that eventually they got used to it happening occasionally and it really didn't seem to bother them much at all. Carol Jean Carol Jean |
