| Need advice quickly about supplementing a pup O.K. I've done this a hundred times but never on a yorkie pup so not sure. It is the smallest of the litter he weighs 2 ounces and he looks thin. He was born yesterday and he seems to act fine but his tummy doesn't look full at all. So I tried to supplement but not sure if he got any. How big of a whole should I put in the nipple? I punctured it with a needle a couple of times but he still doesn't look like he's getting any. Also how much in cc should i give him? I've never supplemented a small breed before. Thanks so much.

| mama milk is always better than supplement... if you have to.... pull the other pups aside and let the little one feed first. If he is too weak to feed.... make some sugar water and drop it in his mouth so he has energy. I went through the same thing with my last little. Had a very skinny little boy and he was not getting enough milk. As a good breeder you have to be there around the clock and make sure he gets milk. Good Luck...... at this point they should be eating every 2 hours or less..... it might be a long night but it'll be worth it in the end..... |

| I've tried that but he doesn't seem to get a good latch. He isn't week YET. I already gave him the sugar water. I just wasn't sure about the bottle and how much for a pup so tiny.. Can anyone answer this?

| he's a day old right? He might be having a problem latching and just not getting it. my little boy had the same problem..... but I will just open his mouth and put on the nipple and when he falls just put him up again.... But if you want to give the supplement..... don't poke the hole on the nipple.... you need to cut an X on the tip..... turn ot over and it should have a slow drip...... it it comes out too fast.... you cut too much.... if nothing come out... you need to cut more..... hope that helps. |

| make sure you DO NOT bottle feed him like a baby. You need to hold him chest down and raise his head to feed like he was nursing on mama.... otherwise he might choke on the milk |

| If he is not getting a good latch, check his palate...it is not cleft is it? We had a runt in a Boston Terrier litter and that was what was wrong...he would nurse and nurse and the others were growing by leaps and bounds...he was not...he got weak...we took him in to the vet and lo and behold, the roof is his mouth was wide open.n Good luck...hope everything works out for your little guy.

| What kind of bottle are you using? I am using the Gerber Newborn Bottles with the newborn nipples for mine. I took a safty pin and streached the whole open a little bit more so the pups didn't have to suck and I controlled the flow by how I tipped the bottle. Do not feed like a baby. Position the pup as if he were nursing mom. Hope this helps! |

| I've done alot of rescue with baby kittens and puppies so I know how to do all that. I was just worried about how much to give him and how much to cut the nipple with him being a tiny yorkie. So basically I need to do as if I was fostering a baby kitten. I already checked the roof of his mouth..that was my first thought but he's fine there. He just doesn't stay latched. I kept opening his mouth and putting him on and he'd suck a little and fall off...so basically I just need to keep doing that then right? should I still supplement or just keep letting him nurse from mama without the others in there?

| he goes went to town on the bottle. I just felt like the hole needed to be bigger. He just seems so skinny. I don't want to overreact but don't want to underreact either..He had a good hold on the bottle but just didn't seem to have that same hold on her teet..

| Just thought I"d let everyone know how he's doing..He's not doing so good this morning..I really thought he'd get better he seemed to at first. But I honestly dont' think he's going to make it. His mom has rejected him. She won't even le him near her. So I had to move him out. My other mama though is actually keeping watch over him. She isn't trying to nurse him but she's laying near him. when I went into my bedroom jersey had him out of her crate and tasha was trying to get him from her. I thought she was trying to take him but she wasn't she was trying to protect him..HOw I figured that out was i put him back in with his mom and she pused him away. She didn't want him near her or the other babies. So I moved him out. I don't think Jersey was trying to kill him but I do beleive she wanted him out. He's really week. I warmed him up then gave him just a few drops of water with sugar and a few drops of formula. But I have to say it doesn't look good. I've took care of enough orphaned babies to know that I don't think he will pull through. I wonder if something was wrong with him from the get go. Or maybe he just wasn't ready to be born. She did have them when she was 59 days pregnant.

| pup Warm sugar water is okay, but no formula unless he is warm...a cold pup can not digest food. Best wishes |

| I had to pen up tyra because she wanted to steal him. Every female in the house wants him but his own mama He is good and warm but still not out of the woods obviously. I am just trying to keep him warm and i'm only giving him little drops of sugar water and formula. We were going to keep him *sob* I really hope he pulls through. My daughter asked me if she could keep him when she first seen him and I had told her yes. Now when she comes home from school she is going to be so upset. Jessica (she's 15) is who i'm talking about. She is so soft hearted..she is really going to take this hard..and I hate to see her upset. She is such a gentle natured girl. She wants to be a vet when she grows up so she is always saving some animal or another..once she did a c-section on a mole that the cat had killed..I called the vet and asked how do I feed them..he said they won't make it two hours..they made it 36 hours..she held down the cat that killed the mama and made her nurse those babies..lol..my daughter is just awesome..
