It is NOT very common in yorkies, and it is not genetic. I have heard of a couple of yorkies that have had it along with other breeds, and it is a dangerous disease if not diagnosed early. you can read a little about it at this site http://yorkieviews.com/hge.htm Last edited by Baron; 03-10-2006 at 12:05 PM. | |

No Longer a Member | Gizmo was in the doggy Intensive Care with this not a month ago, it was a nightmare. Do not know about it being a Yorkie thing or not. His digestive system has never been the best, has had different problems thoughout his little life. Pancreatitis a year ago and now this. Have to be very picky with what he eats. I do know they can go down very quickly. One night he was laying around not interested in dinner, by the next morning he was in intensive care shaking and bleeding badly from the back end. Have almost lost him a few times. This morning we're watching the sun come up together and all is well. |

| My Yorkie had bouts of gastroenteritis, a few involved bloody stools. Everytime it was caused by giving her something to eat that she shouldn't have. Visitors don't know how much danger one little Cheese Nip can be for these with sensitive stomachs. I always kept her warm, put her on pedialyte fed with a syringe every hour or so, and fed her rice and boiled chicken. The diarrhea never lasted more than 3 days (usually less) and she was back to her old self again. |

| Gastroenteritis Hi. My little Bennie was diagnosed with gastroenteritis with blood in stool also vomiting. The vet said he had ulcers too. He is in the hospital tonight on antibiotics intravenously since he had some sort of viral thing going on too. yesterday he was fine running and playing and I noticed this afternoon he was laying around...I didnt notice he had thrown up anywhere and then he did so I checked around the house and found more. He felt warm to the touch so I took him to the vet immediately. I never noticed any diarrhea but I was told he had blood in his stool sample....scary stuff. The vet didnt sound like it was life threatening that he just needed antibiotics and monitoring overnight and possibly tomorrow all day too. I of course got on the internet and read where it can be fatal and that scared me. I feel like I got him to the vet in time... |

| I've been dealing with bloody stools and vomiting since December. I have the stools cleared up thanks to natural balance grain free fish and sweet potato and animal essentials probiotics and plant enzymes. I highly recommend the probiotics and enzymes. Through a lot of research these past months I have learned that this is usually caused by food intolerance or allergy. What food does he eat now? Daisy stayed the night in the hospital and they put her on a special diet. I recommend following the diet and giving nothing else to them. They sell probiotics at the vet usually purina brand. I heard this can bother dogs prone to gastroenteritis so I found the animal essentials brand. I didn't realize how strict to be with food and she ended up having three cases o bloody stools. Sill trying to stop the vomiting but at least no more diarrhea. If you need any advice feel free to private message me! |

| HG I too have been told by a specialist that is is very common in yorkies and the gene for it can be passed along. I have read material that states it is and some that says it is not genetic. I tend to believe it is. I had a male that was very sick numerous times with it. He actually lived to be nine in spite of the problems we encountered. He had been used as stud before the first attack and sure enough there was one little female in that litter who inherited the problem. The other three were fine. The little female is going through much the same thing except the specialist we work with got us started early with Pickles. She has a daily dose of amphoral to keep her little insides from hemorraging (sp) and antibiotics for emergencies. She is different from her Dad in that when she starts bleeding it turns into a puddle. He usually started with diarrhea and it turned bloody. The first time with Pickles was during the night and we thought she was dead when we found her in a puddle of blood the next morning. Rushed her to the vet and after meds and IV she was home in a couple of days. With her if I am attentive enough I can tell when it is coming on by the way she acts and the squealing her little tummy does. It is a horrible way for her to have to live. But this line (HG) will end with her. She is very precious though. She has to sleep in my room and stay with my MIL while I work. It is funny how even in my sleep I hear her when her tummy starts. She is a parti and the sweetest little angel. She is well worth the extra efforts, just wish she didnt have to suffer and could get treats like the others. Diet is the key to keeping it under control. It makes my day to pick her up and see her dancing on her little back feet with front legs crossed in the air. We call it the "Pickles Party"

| Has the medicines worked for your little girl in preventing hge. How often does it occur with her? My little girl has had three episodes since she was 7 monts old. She will be two in July. I've got her on grain free fish and sweet potato no treats and probiotics and digestive enzymes. Which I think has cleared up her stool. She's still regurgitating though. I read yesterday that our stress could cause a dog to have hge. I've also read their diet plays a big part in managing the disease |

| Female with Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis My little one hasnt had an episode in 1 1/2 yrs. I use my amphoral when I start hearing her warning signs (squealing tummy). If yours does this, you will know because it is a horrible squealing sound. She gets no treats and stays on ID Dog Food. Her episodes are so bad that she has to be hospitalized if I don't catch it in time. I just pray it continues to work for us. She really bleeds when she has a full fledged episode. Good luck with your girl.

| Mine does the squaling noise as well. She was hospitalized once and then ivs and medicines and sent home twice. She has so much blood come out in the stool you see no stool only a huge puddle of blood. The puddle is almost 4 inches wide all around and bright red. I'm going to have to look into the medicine your talking about. |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | My little 2lber had it last April - she was in ER Hospital for 3 days & was very sick....she had a knuckle bone the day before & they think it had some type of bacteria. She has been on SD I/D Canned & Hard food ever since & only Green Beans for treats & is doing great. This was the scariest thing I have ever seen!

and Bear too! ♥ Donating Member | I lost one to this in September and had another one hospitalized with it. You need to act fast when symptoms start because they can go down hill quickly. My vet said it can be caused by several things. We had tests done, but got no answers. Good luck.
