Nursing mama is being depleted I took tasha and the pups to the vet yesterday for the pups to have tails docked and dew claws removed. The vet looked at pups and mama. I had some questions for him and one was that when i squezzed on tashas teets it was hard to get any milk out. He looked at her and said what was going on was the puppies were depleting her. He told me to give her a scrambled egg and crunch up some of the egg shell and put in it that it was the best source of calcium for her. She's making milk but they are sucking her dry almost faster than her body could make it. I hope that makes sense. So my question is should i give her cottage cheese and yogurt as well? I searched on here and found a site about mastitis (that's not what she has) but thought it might be good for her as well. any suggestions? She has been eating and drinking good with the execption of this morning. She ate all of her breakfast but not as heartily as usual. The pups are all doing great. They aren't deydrated at all plus they are gaining weight so they are still getting plenty. It's just draining her. After she ate she was moving around as normal. Thanks..

mom Is your bitch losing weight? What is her diet? She should be eating a dry puppy food mixed with many things...you can make a mixture of chicken/rice/cottage/cooked eggs/small amount of liver and add dry. Keep the bowl full..will she eat yoghart? She should be on a calcium tab also..(give her crushed TUMS. One tab per day.) IF she is not losing weight and the pups are doing well..not crying and gaining weight, then she is making plenty of milk...the milk can not always be expressed..milk will let down as the pups nurse and it is far better to make a touch too little milk then too much..that can lead to eclampsia, where mom makes milk by the buckets and the pups keep draining her dry so she makes more...what mom needs is to make just enough milk to keep her litter growing..good luck PS..if she does not eat well then you must suppliment the pups yourself.

Thank you I am mixing her food with 1 egg with partial egg shell. (that is what the vet told me to do). She is eating good and doing good. The pups are all gaining weight really well and doing great. My vet told me not to give her a supplement he said she didn't need it. To feed her the egg with a little bit of the egg shell and that was plenty. She just had pups March 1st so she still looks scrawny from rib cage down but has plenty of fat on her rib cage. She just ran in here a few minutes ago to get some luvins from me so she has plenty of energy. So I shouldn't worry about not being able to squeeze milk out of her? By all of the signs so far she is giving them plenty of milk.

vet Ask any breeder..your vet is wrong. AFTER whelping they need a calcuim tab, but never before. When it comes to these things a seasoned breeder is your best friend, not the vet...so rely on breeders here. Feed her anything she will eat..no food can hurt her..but make sure she gets plenty of PUPPY dry mixed in with it. Chicken turkey and hamburger is protein...let her lap vanilla yogart from a dish. Press the fat out of any meat. GIVE her a calcuim tab. I do not worry about not being able to express milk IF the pups are growing.

when i mix people food with her dog food she only eats the people food. So should I just her the people food seperate? And should I only give her people food once a day? Also do I give her the tums all at once or give her a half a pill in the morning and half in evening? I keep her dog food down for her to eat when she wants plus I go sit with her and hand feed her her dog food (she likes me to do that lol) so she has access to her food at all times. If i give her the tums should i also feed her food with calcium or should i just stick with protein? The puppys are defenitely getting plenty of milk so it sounds like she is making enough milk..thank you for helping me.

I learned this years ago and it certainly has worked great for me and many other breeders. Mix up a mixture of the following and give it to her two times a day and she will have all the milk the pups can handle. Mix vanilla instant pudding the 4 cup size with 4 cups milk, 4 egg yolks, 1/2 cup sugar. Mix it all up and keep in the fridge. This will help tremendously. Let me know how this works for you as I said this has worked for many many breeders I know. But also give her cottage cheese mixed with canned puppy food and keep dry puppy food there also.

I did have one more question. Do I give her all of this. Tums, Cottage cheese, yogurt, pudding, canned food as well as her dry food? And if so how much of each per day. While she was pregnant I gave her dry dog food as much as she wanted, a spooful of cottage cheese and 1 egg. When she had the puppies I fed her all the dry dog food she wanted, chicken usually about 1/2 cup and 1 egg. I should mention that not only are the pups healthy they are straight up fat lil things. And I will defenitely follow all of your advice.

I don't know what to tell you about all the other advise but as I said I can tell you the mothers mild mixture I gave you I use two times a day and the canned puppy food and cottage mixture I give two times a day and I leave down the dry puppy food all the time for her. Hope this works as it sure has for me. Good Luck.

| I think since the vet suggested the babies were draining her dry....the thought brings the fear of eclampsia. This is why it's so important to suppliment with tums 1/2 tab in the am 1/2 at night...Cottage cheese, cheese, yogurt, eggs, chicken, dry puppy food....feedings should be all anytime...what ever she wants. Glad the babies are doing well...
