| Still has diarrhea, Please help! Emilee has had diarrhea now since last Monday (2/20/06) On Tuesday it was very runny, no substance whatsoever. I took her to the Vet. He gave her Cimetidine 200 mg to decrease acid in stomach. She takes one per day and is still has six doses to go. He also gave her Loperamide anti-dearrheal liquid (3 doses). She's done with that. She has not had a temperatue at all. Her stool has thickened, but is far from "log" form. She's been eating Science Diet puppy hard and canned mixed together. I've seen on YT about giving some cottage cheese and asked Vet about it and he told me it is not a good idea to give cottage cheese even though they like it. Emilee is still nursing (whelped 2/1/06). If I cut down on the canned food, it helps a little. Should a nursing mother have the canned food or is she okay with just the dry? She acts like she feels good, plays, eats well, drinks plenty of water. I just don't know what to do. I am calling the Vet again this morning as soon as they open. I'm tired of worrying and cleaning up diarrhea. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

| Wish I could help you. My girl, Georgia, has the same problem. She whelped on 01/15. I've had her to the vet 4x. Her fecal is always neg. bloodwork is fine, just keeps having bouts of diarrhea. I mix plain yogurt( 1/2-1t.) in her food & that seems to help. Also vet gave her Albon just in case. I feel so sorry for her. She is skin & bones. This is her 1st litter. Her baby boy will be 6 weeks tomorrow. I'm trying to wean him,but he's so tiny. 14 oz. I won't breed Georgia again. I'll have her spayed & find loving forever home for her. Sorry to run on. I hope your little girl gets better real soon. |

| diet I would stop the canned asap...boil a whole chicken, remove the skin and bones. Press out the fat. Fix a batch of rice. Put them in small plastic bags and freeze. Add a bag of food to the dry each meal...the canned is too rich right now. Whispersmom would tell you to also cook up hamburger in this same fashion. I would not go back to canned at all..good luck |

| Thank you Jan L. This is Emilee's first litter too. I was thinking of spaying her later, but then was told this could happen just because it's her first litter. I don't know whether to try one more time and then spay her or not. Do you know whether she needs the canned puppy food or can I just feed her the dry? I should know more in about 10 minutes when the Vet opens. Thanks again.

| Thank you YorkieRose. I have boneless chicken breasts in the freezer. Would that be okay to use? Just boil them? And what kind of rice? I think I have some, but we are not big rice fans. Just follow directions on box?

| I just talked with my Vet. He said to take another stool sample in (which I'll do within the hour) and I should get some of the ID food. He said it was good for stress due to puppies or just about any kind of upset stomach. I asked him about the chicken, and he said that was okay, but the better thing would be ground turkey and boil that, it has less fat in it. Does that sound like he knows what he's doing? We've had him as our Vet a long time, but never had a sick dog. Thank God.

| Sounds like the boiled ground turkey is better. I've never boiled ground anything before, but willgive it try. Thanks for letting me know what your vet said. Sounds like he knows what he's talking about IMO. Good luck with your girl. And let me know how she's doing. |

| Okay, just got back from taking stool sample to Vet. Everything came back negative. Nothing to be found in her stool. He gave me the ID food and said to let her eat that and no dry for the time being. Give her till Tuesday (since she acts as normal as ever, except for the stool) and if that helps I can gradually work the previous food back in but if it starts getting runny again, to back off her normal food and stick with the ID. I just gave her some and she acts like she was starved which is not the case. Guess she likes the ID. He also said that if it didn't clear up, another sample would have to be sent to a lab for more extensive testing. Thank you everyone for the help. Keep us in the doggie prayers that it clears it up. I truly love you gals and guys.

| diet Turkey works well also..you can buy it at the store like hamburger...lean hamburger, chicken breasts..all work well..just press out the fat. AN aid to preventing the stool problem after whelping..start with the mixture. I use boil in bag rice. Whispersmom and I talked about bitch diet many times when she visited. She makes small packets and heats them in the microwave..it is just easier to make a big batch at once and freeze..as opposed to every day or so. Right now I would stop the dry and let her gut rest..give her the meat/rice for perhaps two days and then slowly add back the dry. No dry for a couple days will not hurt her at all..it is much harder to digest dry right now. When a bitch has a firm stool I find adding cottage cheese to the mixture causes no problem..you can get a low fat CC. I also add a few minced chicken livers..BUT not if the stool is loose..that can be given in the mixture with a firm stooled mom from the outset..best wishes. |

| I know I'm going to sound like a real dummy, YorkieRose, but what is the name brand of boil in a bag rice you use? Also how much of each (chicken & rice) do you mix together, equal, more of one than the other? Then, how much do you feed them? and how many times a day. I know I sound dumb, but I've always used canned or bagged food and since she's had this diarrhea I sure don't want to screw anything up. I have stopped the dry food and using the ID, but when her stools get back to normal I would like to try what you have suggested. Thank you so much!!!

| diet As I recall I get Uncle Ben's..any type is ok... You are right to continue with the ID..let her get back to normal. You said her baby is 6 weeks..so she will be on her normal diet soon anyway. For the future feeding of a new mom you can try this diet.. I usually cook up 2 bags of rice, add equal amount of ground or minced chicken or turkey. I add two minced chicken livers. Depending on the moms size, I usually put 1/2 cup mixture to 1/2 cup dry..and add about two tablespoons of CC...Now if the mom eats it all in 5 seconds I offer more..if she eats less, I leave it out to see if she goes back in an hour or so. IT will not spoil fast in a normal temp house..outside with a large yard dog it would. I feed my girls 4 meals per day..and always have food over the night time as well. Mine love yogart (calcium) and vanilla pudding,(calcuim) snack cup type..it puts weight on and I like a well rounded mommy while nursing. I will give a cooked egg yolk mixed in sometimes..a few leftover veggies, like green beans, peas, no corn. You do not have to go to these lengths, but a good bitch mixture is important. They slim down so fast after weaning. |
