| liver shunts My baby just died from liver shunts. My husband and I are devastated. I would strongly recommand having your babies tested for it if they are showing any signs of illness, its not something thats easy to go through and the sooner its caught the better. |

| Oh my gosh, I am so sorry to hear that What were her symptoms? My Bella had the bile acid test and her levels were slightly elevated....the vet does not seem too worried and is going to check her more while he has her in to get spayed.

| This is the reason that I urge everyone to have their puppies tested, even if they have never had a problem before. I tell everyone that calls me about a puppy that when they find one they insist that it be tested with a bile acid test BEFORE they take it, even if they have to pay for it. It is very hard to give a puppy back once you have it in your hands and fall in love with it, but if it is tested before you get it, and it has a problem, it is much easier to not take it. Surgery for Liver Shunt runs anywhere from 2000.00 to 4500.00 depending on what occurs, and the 50 to 100 dollars put out before you get attached to a puppy is really worth it. |

| Our yorkie has a high bile acid count as well. He was not diagnosed with this until 4 yrs. of age. (he had kidney stones). We are currently controlling it with diet. So far this has worked for the last 3 yrs. I know it was traumatic for us when he was first diagnosed. |

| I am sooo sorry to hear about your furbaby. Miko has a liver shunt which we found out about when he was about 10 mos old. We decided to get him bile acid tested for peace of mind even though he had no real symtoms...The week before his appt., he had a seizure, and the story goes on from there. He is on medication and a special diet. So, I agree with you, even if you see no symptoms, you might consider getting your yorkie bile acid tested for peace of mind.

| So Sorry. So sorry for your loss. I too have a yorkie with a liver shunt. He was basically normal with only sporadic vomitting episodes(which we didn't know were b/c of the shunt we thought he had a sensitive stomach) until he started having seizures at 14 months of age. He was diagnosed and had ameroid constrictor surgery ($1700) to correct the shunt the next week. We have spent almost $5000 dollars to date and still have an undetermined amount left to spend. I would never wish I didn't have Matise we were meant for each other. I can tell you for those who are looking at getting a yorkie(or another) pay the extra money up front(we didn't know about liver shunts when we bought Matise). A few more dollars up front is worth piece of mind and literally thousands $$$ saved down the road. I love Matise and we were meant to be together, but I would never want anyone to go through what we have, are and will go through, it is emotionally and financially straining. Once again so sorry for your loss.
