Scruffy sick with Heart failure My Scruffy has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. He is now on lasix, aminophyline, and starting enacard, does anyone know what else I can do for him? Any holistic, or alternative, nutritional...anything?? I am sick and sad. He is 13 yrs, had a cough for awhile, thought it was something he always had--that gagging cough he has done for years, but apparently is heart is enlarged--started with a murmur, and had pulmonary edema. He is stable now and at home with me, he seems to be responding to meds, but I want to do all I can to make him comfortable and want to find out more about anyone else's experience with this? Thanks, I have been crying and have a little reprieve now that he is home and seems better.

| Heart Condition Quote:
My Yorkie, Gizmo is 12 yrs old and has the same heart condition. He was put on Lasix about two months ago and is doing well. He still coughs a little but not nearly as bad. The only side effect of Lasix is that it makes him want to drink and pee all the time. We never had this problem with Gizmo until he took Lasix. Another member of this forum said her dog was switched to Vetmedin and Corvental-D and the "peeing like a waterfall" has stopped. I plan to ask my Vet if Gizmo can switch to these. Gizmo is also blind,he has retinal atrophy. But, he gets around and is still very lovable. I have had him since he was 2 months old (a birthday present from my husband) and can't imagine what I will do without my little buddy. My kids are grown and moved out of the house, so Gizmo is my baby....I pray that he will be with me a few more years...My VET says that he thinks that is possible.

I am so sorry to read of the cardiac problems your babies have. My "heart of my Heart, Jesse" had heart and pulmonary problems but his was diue to some really bad reactions to a med at age 6 weeks. The conditions are very similar to what you have described. It is so hard wishing we could make them well, but we can pet them, medicate them, keep them comf and LOVE THE BEJEEBEES out of them..When you think about that, we are giving them more than some humans have.. I will remember the little ones in my prayers...and their moms and dads..

thanks for all support of Scruffy.. Thanks everyone for you kind words and prayers. Scruffy seems stable and even wagged. I made a "ramp" of pillows so he can get on his-(yes, his) couch. He did his little-roly-poly thing on his back too! So so far so good about the meds.

What she said! My toy poodle, Dax, was on two of those meds that you mention and he lived about 5 years more after starting those - he was 15 years old when he finally had a stroke and had to be put down. He also had really bad teeth from early on and when he would get a real bad one, it would have to be pulled because the infection could travel to his heart and cause more problems. He really never had the cough that you refer to though. I was devastated at first when he was first diagnosed and told my vet that I was afraid I was doing more harm than good by giving his these meds but he assured me that I "would know" when Daxton's time was up. He was still in "puppy mode" up until his last couple days when he got an eye infection and I guess the infection was too hard for his system. He had a stroke and of course, then "I knew" what had to be done. But on the bright side, please give these meds a chance. We noticed a huge improvement in Daxton's quality of life after his started working. Here's hoping for many more years with your baby!!

I work in a cardiology office and we have many patients with congestive heart failure. It is a very serious condition. Your pup is on the same medications that most of our patients are on. Unfortunately, CHF is a terminal disease, but one that can often be treated for a long period of time. Believe me - there are no "magic cures." If there were, my cardiologists would be the first to know about them....and we'd be using them. I am sure that all you can do is get regular vet care and faithfully give your dog all the medications that your vet is prescribing. He probably wouldn't live very long without these medications. They are very important. His major problem is the fluid that he is retaining and these medicines help keep this fluid buildup to a minimum. I'm sorry your puppy has this problem. It certainly is serious. Take good care of your little guy and religiously follow your vet's advice. Carol Jean
