| Does any one elses puppy have bouts of diarrhea? I just took my puppy to the vet today for shots and a check up. I mentioned that the puppy had diarrhea the last time the vet gave him vaccinations for two days. The vet stated that this wasn't really that typical. My puppy also had diarrhea after a raw hide incident, when my husband went away and vacation, and has had 2-3 cases for no apparent reason. I just assumed that the diarrhea was him ajusting to his new home, changes and possibly nervousness. The vet mentioned that his can be a sign of congenital problems....does anyone else have a pet with infrequent problems? |

I have one little guy that it is a constant struggle with diarrhea. He is very sensitive and I cannot change his diet one bit or I have a problem. He has Irritable Bowl Syndrom. Yorkies have very sensitive tummies and I would not give him raw hides.

| YES we had this problem. Sometimes I could trace it back to food or rawhide or something, but sometimes it was out of nowhere. Only once was it giardia (a parasite) so the rest must have been food related. We switched to Canidae dry food and haven't had problems since. Loki gets no "table" food and only treats with very few ingredients (Charlee Bears and Cloud Star Itty Bitty Buddy Biscuits). We've very careful with him, but he's been good now for about 4 months! I've sliped him things, like a small piece of cheese, that would have made him sick before and he's been fine!! When your pup gets diarrhea it's safe to feed plain rice, but start with a little bit. It's always good to get a fecal smear at the vet to rule out worms or a parasite. Loki had to get medicine 3 or 4 times it was that bad, it started with an M. No more! I LOVE Canidae.

| Otis' food I feed Otis IAMS puppy food, which his breeder fed him before he came to stay with me. My husband and I do not feed him table food and have asked our family and friends to do the same. He gets pupperoni treats during training and used to get "dingo" rawhides before he scared us with a peice that was too large. We try to break the pupperoni treats into small pieces and then split them in half again - do you think these treats could be too rich for his stomach? I wondered if it could have something to do with our drinking water.....although it seems that he would have constant problems. Otis always has an appetite for his food and seems to like it.... He just turned 17 weeks this week. |

Pupperonis could TOTALLY be causing the problem. Any chewy treat like that would make Loki sick within HOURS. Even a little taste. We threw away lots of treats and now only use dry treats with few ingredients. Also, you did the right thing keeping him on the same food as the breeder and I don't suggest changing his diet until he is over the diarrhea, however, NOW is the time to start researching good quality puppy foods for him. IAMS is one of the worst brands out there. It's basically fortified sawdust, chicken feet, beaks, stomach contents, meat from downed (cancerous) animals... There's also artificial preservatives in it that can build up in his body and cause cancer. Check out this website and compare the definitions to the ingredients on the back of your bag of IAMS: http://www.sniksnak.com/ac/petfooddefinitions.html http://www.sniksnak.com/ac/petfood.html Then check into feeding one of these brands: Canidae Innova California Natural Wellness There are others that are just as good. If you want more choices I have a list of a TON of great foods.

| I have the diarrhea problem with several of my kids, anything other than Nutro for sensitive stomach will set them off. I have not yet found a treat for them that doesn't cause diarrhea. Any suggestions out there? I don't give them anything for the diarrhea unless it last longer than 24 hrs. Then I get something from my vet. |

| I have a female who has been in our family for about 2 years now. Terribly sensitive stomach. Finally got her on Innova EVO and Merrick canned (2 tbsp twice a day-chicken/turkey formulation only) and she is doing GREAT!! No more metronidazole, no more albon...nothing. She poops once a day and that's it unless hubby feeds her too much. I also son't give her any treats unless they have MINIMAL ingredients and generally made with organic or human grade ingredients. Good luck

| It could be anything from stress of a new home and new surroundings to a very sudden change in diet instead of slowly switching over. And too much rawhide will give diahrea

| Parker had the same problem with the bouts of diarhea which seemed to come from nowhere. BUT, I had him on Iams puppy when I first got him, I assumed it was a good food (until joining yourkietalk, and doing a little research), but shortly after I switched him off the Iams and he has been much better. He's on Nutro Natural Choice now. Afterword, my mom said she had the same problem with Iams and their dog as well. Iams is garbage. The pupperoni's could also cause a problem, I have to be careful with trying treats cuz anything new sets him off. Usually dry treats are fine its when we try the chewy ones. Such a sensitive tummy. Sometimes he will steal a few pieces of my mom's dog's food before we get to him, and even that will go right through him. So I have to really be careful, any change at all is a mess, lol |
